How to Use
Dosage
The recommended dose is 20 mg or 40 mg once daily.
Method
The medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein. This takes up to 30 minutes.
Important
The maximum daily dose is 40 mg. For severe liver problems, the maximum dose is 20 mg per day.
Possible Side Effects
COMMON
- •Headache
- •Stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, or gas
- •Nausea or vomiting
- •Reactions at the injection site
- •Benign stomach polyps
RARE
- •Swelling of the feet and ankles
- •Sleep problems (insomnia)
- •Dizziness, tingling feeling, or drowsiness
- •Blurred vision
- •Dry mouth
- •Skin rash, hives, or itching
- •Fractures of the hip, wrist, or spine
- •Changes in blood tests (e.g., low white blood cells, low sodium)
- •Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
- •Changes in taste
- •Wheezing or shortness of breath
- •Liver problems, including yellow skin/eyes (jaundice)
- •Hair loss
- •Muscle weakness
- •Severe kidney problems
- •Low magnesium levels in the blood (can cause tiredness, muscle twitches, confusion, fast heartbeat)
- •Inflammation in the bowel causing diarrhea
Important Warnings
- Do not take if you are allergic to esomeprazole, similar medicines (proton pump inhibitors), or any other ingredients.
- Do not take if you are taking nelfinavir (used for HIV infection).
- Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you get a severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS).
- Contact your doctor immediately if you lose a lot of weight for no clear reason, have trouble swallowing, get stomach pain, vomit food or blood, or have black stools.
- Long-term use (over a year) may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine).
