How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take, but it's usually one 20 mg or 40 mg tablet once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet. If you have trouble swallowing, you can dissolve it in a glass of still water and drink it right away.

Important

The maximum daily dose can be up to 160 mg, usually taken as 80 mg twice a day. Your doctor will specify your dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or gut problems: diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Benign stomach polyps (growths)
RARE
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in liver blood tests
  • Itching, skin rash, hives
  • Bone fractures (hip, wrist, spine) with long-term, high-dose use
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., low white blood cells or platelets, leading to weakness, bruising, or infections)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, vomiting, and cramps)
  • Agitation, confusion, or depression
  • Changes in taste
  • Blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining
  • Thrush (fungal infection of the digestive tract)
  • Hair loss
  • Sun rash
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • General feeling of being unwell
  • Increased sweating
  • Severe decrease in all blood cells (white, red, and platelets)
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlargement of breasts in men
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood (can cause tiredness, muscle twitches, confusion, seizures, dizziness, fast heartbeat)
  • Inflammation in the gut (microscopic colitis) causing diarrhea
  • Skin rash, possibly with joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to esomeprazole or similar medicines (ending in '-prazole').
  • Do not use if you are taking nelfinavir, an HIV medicine.
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor right away if you get a severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin, or mouth sores.
  • Tell your doctor if you have serious liver or kidney problems.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you have unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting blood or food, or black stools.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
