Esomeprazol Sandoz is a medicine that reduces stomach acid and is used for a short time to treat reflux symptoms like heartburn and acid flowing up into the throat.

How to Use

Dosage

Take one 20 mg tablet once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Do not chew or crush it. You can take it at any time of day, with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing, dissolve one tablet in a glass of non-carbonated water, stir until it breaks apart, and drink immediately. Rinse the glass with half a glass of water and drink that too. Do not chew the particles.

Important

Do not use Esomeprazol Sandoz for more than 2 weeks without talking to a doctor. Maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or gut issues: diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Benign stomach polyps
RARE
  • Swelling of hands, ankles, or feet
  • Sleeplessness
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in blood tests for liver function
  • Itching
  • Rash
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Hip, wrist, or spine fracture (with high doses over a long time)
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Changes in blood counts, like fewer white blood cells or platelets (can cause weakness, bruising, or make you prone to infections)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, vomiting, and cramps)
  • Agitation, confusion, or depression
  • Changes in taste
  • Blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (narrowing of airways)
  • Inflammation of the mouth lining
  • Thrush (fungal infection in the digestive tract)
  • Hair loss
  • Rash from sun exposure
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • General feeling of being unwell
  • Increased sweating
  • Lack of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets
  • Aggressiveness
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms).
  • Yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness, which can be signs of liver problems.
  • This medicine can affect white blood cells, leading to a weakened immune system and infections.
  • Severe liver problems that can cause liver failure and brain disease, leading to confusion, unusual behavior, or drowsiness.
  • If you use this medicine for more than three months, your blood magnesium levels may drop, causing tiredness, involuntary muscle twitches, confusion, convulsions, dizziness, and a fast heartbeat.
  • Inflammation in the intestine (microscopic colitis) causing diarrhea.
  • Rash, possibly with joint pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Esomeprazol Sandoz if you are allergic to esomeprazole or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to similar medicines that end with '-prazole' (like pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, omeprazole).
  • Do not use if you are taking a medicine for HIV infection called nelfinavir.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores after taking Esomeprazol Sandoz or similar medicines.
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have severe liver problems.

  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are scheduled for a specific blood test (Chromogranin A).
  • Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you have previously had a skin reaction when using a medicine to reduce stomach acid, similar to Esomeprazol Sandoz.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek urgent medical help if you notice signs of severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or DRESS (Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms).
  • See a doctor right away if you experience significant unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, stomach pain or indigestion, vomiting food or blood, or black stools.
  • Using this medicine for over a year may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures. Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis or use corticosteroids.
  • Do not use Esomeprazol Sandoz for more than 2 weeks without talking to a doctor. Consult a doctor if your symptoms do not improve or worsen after 2 weeks of continuous treatment.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
