How to Use

Dosage

Take one Esomeprazol ratiopharm 20 mg capsule once a day, or as directed by your doctor.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a small amount of water; do not chew or crush it. You can take it with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 160 mg of esomeprazol (80 mg twice daily).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, or gas
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or being sick (vomiting)
  • Small harmless growths in the stomach (polyps)
RARE
  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia) or feeling sleepy
  • Dizziness, tingling, or numbness
  • Dry mouth
  • Skin rash, hives, or itching
  • Changes in liver blood tests
  • Bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine) with long-term high doses
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., fewer white blood cells or platelets)
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Changes in taste or blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Inflammation in the mouth or gut
  • Hair loss or skin rash from sunlight
  • Muscle or joint pain
  • Increased sweating
  • Severe allergic reaction (with swelling of face/throat, difficulty breathing, fainting)
  • Severe skin reactions (blistering, peeling skin, high fever)
  • Severe liver problems (yellow skin, dark urine, tiredness)
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood (e.g., tiredness, muscle cramps, fast heartbeat)
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlarged male breasts

Important Warnings

  • If you experience unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting (especially if it contains blood), or black stools, contact your doctor immediately.
  • Long-term use (over one year) of this medicine may slightly increase your risk of bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine).
  • If you develop a rash, especially on sun-exposed skin areas, tell your doctor immediately, as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Stop taking the medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience severe skin reactions such as blistering, peeling skin, or a widespread rash with high fever.
  • Tell your doctor if you have serious liver or kidney problems or if you are scheduled for a specific blood test (chromogranin A).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
