How to Use

Dosage

One 20 mg capsule per day.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with a glass of water. Do not chew or crush it. You can take it with or without food, at any time of day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or gut problems (diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Small growths in the stomach (benign polyps)
  • Swelling in feet and ankles
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Dizziness, tingling or numbness, drowsiness
  • Vertigo (a spinning sensation)
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in liver blood test results
  • Rash, hives, and itchy skin
  • Bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine), especially with long-term high-dose use
RARE
  • Changes in blood cell counts (leading to weakness, bruising, or frequent infections)
  • Low sodium in the blood (can cause weakness, vomiting, and seizures)
  • Agitation, confusion, or depression
  • Changes in taste
  • Vision problems (like blurred vision)
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Inflammation in the mouth
  • Thrush (a fungal infection that may affect the gut)
  • Liver problems including jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness)
  • Hair loss
  • Sun rash
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • General feeling of being unwell and lack of energy
  • Increased sweating
  • Severe changes in blood cell counts, including very low white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Aggression
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real)
  • Severe liver problems leading to liver failure and brain inflammation
  • Severe skin reactions, including peeling skin and blisters (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, DRESS syndrome)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Low levels of magnesium in the blood (possibly with long-term use, causing tiredness, muscle twitching, confusion, seizures, dizziness, or fast heart rate)
  • Inflammation in the gut (causing diarrhea)
  • Rash with possible joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Esomeprazol ratiopharm, other similar medicines (PPIs), or any of its ingredients. Also, do not use if you have had a severe skin rash from similar medicines before.
  • Do not use if you are taking nelfinavir, a medicine for HIV infection.
  • Talk to your doctor before use if you have severe liver or kidney problems, or if you are scheduled for a special blood test (Chromogranin A).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained weight loss, trouble swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting after meals, vomiting blood, or black stools.
  • If you get a rash, especially in sun-exposed areas, tell your doctor. Stop using this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you notice signs of severe skin reactions like peeling skin or blisters.

  • This medicine is for adults only. Do not give it to children or adolescents under 18 without a doctor's prescription.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or use machines if you feel dizzy or have vision problems after taking this medicine.
  • If you take too much medicine, or if a child takes it by accident, contact a doctor, hospital, or Poison Information Centre immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
