How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one tablet (20 mg) once a day.

Method

Take the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. Do not chew or crush the tablet as it has a special coating that protects the medicine from stomach acid.

Important

Do not take more than one tablet (20 mg) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or gut issues: diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting
  • Small, harmless growths in the stomach (polyps)
RARE
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia), drowsiness
  • Dizziness, tingling or prickling sensation
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in liver blood tests
  • Rash, hives, and itchy skin
  • Bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine) if used for a long time at high doses
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., fewer white blood cells or platelets, leading to weakness, bruising, or infections)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, vomiting, cramps)
  • Feeling restless, confused, or depressed
  • Changes in taste
  • Vision problems, such as blurred vision
  • Wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Inflammation in the mouth
  • Thrush (a white fungal infection in the mouth, throat, or esophagus)
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellow skin/eyes, dark urine, tiredness)
  • Hair loss (alopecia)
  • Rash when exposed to sunlight
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • General feeling of being unwell or lack of energy
  • Increased sweating
  • Low levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets (pancytopenia)
  • Aggressiveness
  • Hallucinations (seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real)
  • Severe liver problems leading to liver failure and brain inflammation
  • Sudden severe rash, blistering, or peeling skin (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood (can cause weakness, vomiting, cramps, tremors, and heart rhythm changes). Very low levels can also affect calcium and potassium.
  • Inflammation of the intestine (causing diarrhea)
  • Rash with possible joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to esomeprazole or any other ingredients in it, or to other similar stomach acid medicines (proton pump inhibitors).
  • Do not take this medicine if you are taking nelfinavir, a medicine for HIV infection.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have ever had a severe skin rash, skin peeling, blisters, or mouth sores after taking Esomeprazol Orion or similar medicines.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you lose a lot of weight for no clear reason.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have trouble or pain when swallowing.

  • Contact a doctor immediately if you start to vomit food or blood, especially if it looks like dark coffee grounds.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if your stools are dark or bloody.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you have severe or lasting diarrhea, as this medicine may slightly increase the risk of infectious diarrhea.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you get a rash, especially on areas exposed to the sun, as your treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Long-term use (over one year) of this medicine may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
