How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will determine your dose. For adults and adolescents aged 12-18 years, the usual dose is 20 mg or 40 mg once daily. For children aged 1-11 years, the usual dose is 10 mg or 20 mg once daily.

Method

The medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein, and it can take up to 30 minutes.

Important

Usually up to 40 mg per day. For severe liver disease, the maximum is 20 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or intestinal problems like diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, or gas
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Reactions at the injection site
  • Small growths (polyps) in the stomach
RARE
  • Swelling in feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling or prickling sensations, sleepiness
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Vision problems, such as blurred vision
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in blood tests that check liver function
  • Skin rash, hives, or itching
  • Hip, wrist, or spine fractures (if used for a long time at high doses)
  • Changes in blood cell counts (e.g., reduced white blood cells or platelets) leading to weakness, bruising, or infections
  • Low sodium levels in the blood, which can cause weakness, vomiting, and cramps
  • Agitation, confusion, or depression
  • Changes in taste
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Inflammation in the mouth
  • Thrush, a fungal infection that can affect the gut
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine, tiredness)
  • Hair loss
  • Rash that appears on sun-exposed skin
  • Joint pain or muscle pain
  • General feeling of being unwell or lack of energy
  • Increased sweating
  • Very rare blood changes, including severe lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis)
  • Aggressiveness
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Severe liver problems leading to liver failure and brain inflammation
  • Sudden severe skin rash with blisters or peeling skin, possibly with high fever and joint pain (severe skin reactions like erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or DRESS syndrome)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Low magnesium levels in the blood (if used for more than three months), causing tiredness, muscle twitching, confusion, convulsions, dizziness, and fast heart rate.
  • Gut inflammation (causing diarrhea)
  • Rash, possibly with joint pain

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to esomeprazole or similar medicines (proton pump inhibitors) or any other ingredient.
  • Do not take if you are currently using nelfinavir (an HIV medicine).
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a severe skin rash, blisters, or peeling skin with mouth sores after taking this or similar medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney problems, or a history of skin reactions to similar acid-reducing medicines.
  • Contact your doctor right away if you experience unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, stomach pain, indigestion, vomiting food or blood, or dark stools.

  • Long-term use (over a year) may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures. Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis or use corticosteroids.
  • If you get a rash, especially in sun-exposed areas, tell your doctor, as treatment may need to be stopped.
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you have sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue, throat or body, rash, fainting, or trouble swallowing (signs of a severe allergic reaction).
  • Stop taking this medicine and seek immediate medical help if you have yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness (signs of liver problems), or a severe skin rash with blisters or peeling skin, especially with high fever and joint pain (signs of very serious skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS syndrome).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
