How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the correct dose, typically 20 mg or 40 mg once a day, depending on your condition.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 160 mg (taken as 80 mg twice a day for specific conditions).

Possible Side Effects

  • Headache
  • Stomach or bowel problems (diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas)
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Benign stomach polyps (growths)
RARE
  • Swelling in feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling, sleepiness
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in liver function blood tests
  • Rash, hives, and itching
  • Hip, wrist, or spine fracture (if used long-term at high doses)
  • Changes in blood counts (e.g., fewer white blood cells or platelets, leading to weakness, bruising, or increased infection risk)
  • Low sodium levels in blood (causing weakness, vomiting, and seizures)
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Taste changes
  • Vision problems (e.g., blurred vision)
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Inflammation of the mouth or thrush (fungal infection)
  • Liver problems (including jaundice, yellow skin, dark urine, and tiredness)
  • Hair loss
  • Skin rash from sunlight
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • General feeling of being unwell or lack of energy
  • Increased sweating
  • Very rare: changes in blood counts (including severe lack of white blood cells), aggression, hallucinations, severe liver problems (liver failure, brain inflammation), muscle weakness, severe kidney problems, enlarged male breasts.
  • Frequency unknown: low magnesium levels in blood (causing tiredness, muscle cramps, confusion, seizures, dizziness, fast heartbeat), inflammation in the intestine (causing diarrhea), skin rash with possible joint pain.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to esomeprazole, other similar medicines for stomach acid, or nelfinavir (an HIV medicine).
  • Stop taking the medicine and call your doctor right away if you experience unexplained weight loss, difficulty swallowing, severe stomach pain, vomiting blood, or black stools.
  • Long-term use (over one year) may increase the risk of bone fractures in the hip, wrist, or spine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • If you get a skin rash, especially in sun-exposed areas, tell your doctor as treatment may need to be stopped.
