How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take. A common dose is one 20 mg tablet once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water, at any time of day, with or without food. Do not chew or crush them.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or bowel problems: diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas
  • Feeling sick (nausea) or vomiting
  • Benign growths (polyps) in the stomach
RARE
  • Swelling of the feet and ankles
  • Sleep problems (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, tingling sensations, sleepiness, or a spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in blood tests for liver function
  • Skin rash, hives, and itching
  • Hip, wrist, or spine fractures
  • Changes in blood cells (e.g., fewer white blood cells or platelets), which can cause weakness, bruising, or infections
  • Low sodium levels in the blood, which can cause weakness, vomiting, and seizures
  • Feeling agitated, confused, or depressed
  • Taste changes
  • Vision problems, like blurred vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath (bronchospasm)
  • Inflammation in the mouth
  • Fungal infection (thrush) in the mouth, throat, or esophagus
  • Liver problems, including jaundice (yellow skin, dark urine, tiredness)
  • Hair loss
  • Rash from sun exposure
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • General feeling of being unwell or lack of energy
  • Increased sweating
  • Severe lack of white blood cells (agranulocytosis), making you prone to infections
  • Aggression
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Severe liver failure or brain inflammation
  • Muscle weakness
  • Severe kidney problems
  • Enlarged breasts in men

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to Esomeprazol Hexal or similar acid-reducing medicines (proton pump inhibitors).
  • Do not take if you are using nelfinavir (a medicine for HIV infection).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you have sudden wheezing, swelling of your lips, tongue, throat or body, skin rash, or feel faint. These are signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Stop taking and see a doctor right away if you get severe skin rash, blistering, or peeling skin (especially around mouth, eyes, nose, genitals) or a widespread rash with fever and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Tell your doctor immediately if you lose a lot of weight for no clear reason, have trouble swallowing, get stomach pain, vomit food or blood, or have black stools.

  • Long-term use (over one year) may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures (hip, wrist, or spine).
