How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how many tablets to take. Usually, it's one or two tablets a day.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water. You can take them with or without food, at any time of day. Do not chew or crush them.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 160 mg (80 mg twice daily) for certain conditions. Always follow your doctor's instructions for your specific dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Stomach or bowel problems: diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, gas
  • Feeling sick or vomiting
  • Small growths in the stomach (polyps)
RARE
  • Swelling of feet and ankles
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Dizziness, pins and needles, or feeling sleepy
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in liver test results
  • Skin rash, itching, or hives
  • Broken bones in the hip, wrist, or spine (especially with long-term high doses)
  • Low levels of magnesium in your blood (can cause tiredness, muscle twitching, confusion, seizures, dizziness, and fast heartbeat)
  • Changes in blood cells (can make you weak, bruise easily, or get infections)
  • Low levels of sodium in your blood (can cause weakness, feeling sick, vomiting, or seizures)
  • Feeling restless, confused, or depressed
  • Changes in taste
  • Blurry vision
  • Sudden wheezing or shortness of breath
  • Mouth sores or fungal infection in the gut
  • Hair loss or skin rash from sun exposure
  • Muscle weakness or joint/muscle aches
  • Feeling generally unwell, tired, or sweating more than usual
  • Aggression or seeing/hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Severe kidney problems or enlarged breasts in men
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (colitis), causing diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • If you lose a lot of weight for no clear reason or have trouble swallowing, tell your doctor.
  • If you have stomach pain or indigestion, start throwing up food or blood, or have dark (bloody) stools, tell your doctor right away.
  • If you get severe or ongoing diarrhea, talk to your doctor.
  • Using this medicine for over a year may slightly increase the risk of bone fractures. Tell your doctor if you have weak bones (osteoporosis) or take certain steroid medicines.
  • If you get a rash, especially on skin exposed to the sun, tell your doctor as soon as possible.

  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you notice yellow skin, dark urine, or extreme tiredness (signs of liver problems).
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you experience sudden wheezing, swelling of lips, tongue, throat, or body, rash, fainting, or trouble swallowing (a severe allergic reaction).
  • Stop taking this medicine and see a doctor immediately if you develop a sudden severe rash, skin redness with blisters or peeling skin (signs of severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. For short-term use only. Consider the numerous potential interactions, especially with clopidogrel and (es)citalopram. Avoid long-term use. Long-term use carries an increased risk of adverse effects. Risk of hypomagnesemia in prolonged use. (updated 10.11.2025)
