How to Use

Dosage

Typically 10 mg once a day, and your doctor may increase the dose as needed.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food; do not chew.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Sleep problems (trouble falling asleep or feeling too sleepy)
  • Dizziness
  • Dry mouth
  • Increased sweating
  • Tiredness
  • Weight gain
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Shaking or tremor
  • Sexual problems (e.g., delayed ejaculation, erection problems, decreased sex drive)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling of face, lips, tongue, difficulty breathing)
  • Unusual bleeding, such as bruising or stomach/intestinal bleeding
  • Serotonin syndrome (symptoms may include fever, confusion, fast heartbeat, shaking, or muscle twitching)
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, or chest pain
  • Seizures (convulsions), especially if they occur for the first time
  • Liver problems (symptoms include yellowing of skin or eyes)
  • Low sodium levels in the blood (symptoms include nausea, tiredness, confusion)
  • Increased risk of bone fractures

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to escitalopram or any other ingredients.
  • Do not use with MAO inhibitors, such as medicines for Parkinson's disease or depression.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an abnormal heart rhythm or take medicines that affect your heart rhythm.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact a doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
  • This medicine is usually not given to children or teenagers under 18 unless specifically directed by a doctor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
