How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 10 mg once a day, but your doctor may adjust it.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Do not chew it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 20 mg for adults, or 10 mg for elderly patients or those with liver problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Changes in appetite (decreased or increased)
  • Anxiety, restlessness, sleep problems (unusual dreams, difficulty falling asleep, drowsiness)
  • Dizziness, yawning, shaking, tingling sensation in the skin
  • Diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, dry mouth
  • Increased sweating
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Sexual problems (e.g., delayed ejaculation, erection problems, decreased sex drive, difficulty reaching orgasm in women)
  • Fatigue, fever, weight gain
RARE
  • Unusual bleeding, including in the stomach or intestines
  • Severe allergic reaction (swelling of skin, face, or throat, difficulty breathing)
  • Serotonin syndrome (high fever, confusion, fast heartbeat, muscle twitching)
  • Seizures
  • Yellow skin and eyes (sign of liver problems)
  • Irregular or fast heartbeat, fainting
  • Suicidal thoughts or actions
  • Low salt level in the blood (nausea, weakness, confusion)
  • Dizziness when standing up
  • Involuntary muscle movements
  • Aggression, hallucinations
  • Slow heart rate

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to escitalopram or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you are taking other medicines called MAO inhibitors (e.g., for Parkinson's disease, depression, or an antibiotic).
  • Consult your doctor if you have congenital heart rhythm problems, have had a heart attack, or are taking medicines that affect your heart rhythm.
  • If you have epilepsy, treatment should stop if seizures appear for the first time or get worse.
  • Be aware of suicidal thoughts or worsening depression/anxiety, especially at the start of treatment or if you are a young adult; seek help immediately.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
