How to Use

Dosage

The typical starting dose is 10 mg once daily, but for panic disorder, it's 5 mg for the first week, then 10 mg daily. For elderly patients, the recommended starting dose is 5 mg once daily.

Method

Take the tablet with water, with or without food. Do not chew it as it tastes bitter.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 20 mg. For people with liver problems or certain genetic conditions, the maximum dose is 10 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Changes in appetite (either more or less)
  • Trouble sleeping, feeling sleepy, dizziness, shaking, tingling skin
  • Dry mouth, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting
  • Increased sweating
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Sexual problems (e.g., trouble with erections or orgasm)
  • Feeling tired, fever, weight gain
  • Feeling anxious or restless, unusual dreams
  • Yawning
RARE
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising (including nosebleeds or heavy periods)
  • Serious allergic reaction (swelling of the face, tongue, or throat; trouble breathing; hives)
  • Serotonin syndrome (high fever, confusion, fast heartbeat, shaking, muscle twitching)
  • Liver problems (yellow skin or eyes)
  • Heart rhythm problems (fast, irregular, or slow heartbeat; fainting; dizziness when standing up)
  • Seizures
  • Strong mood changes (like aggression, seeing/hearing things that aren't there, or feeling overly excited)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Low salt levels in your blood (symptoms like feeling sick, weak muscles, or confused)
  • Increased risk of bone fractures
  • Heavy bleeding after childbirth

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to escitalopram or any of its ingredients.
  • Do not take if you are using certain other medicines called MAO inhibitors (for depression or Parkinson's) or medicines for heart rhythm problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have epilepsy; treatment may need to stop if you have new seizures or if your seizures get worse.
  • Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, diabetes, low blood sodium, or if you bleed easily or bruise often.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor or go to a hospital right away.

  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • Avoid alcohol while you are taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine to discuss benefits and risks.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you.
  • If you feel restless or find it hard to sit or stand still during the first few weeks, tell your doctor right away.
  • This medicine is generally not recommended for children and teenagers under 18 years old.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
