How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take, but usually, adults start with 10 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with water, with or without food. Do not chew the tablet as it tastes bitter. If prescribed, 10 mg and 20 mg tablets can be split.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is usually 20 mg, but your doctor may adjust this. For older patients (over 65) or those with liver problems, the maximum is 10 mg daily.

  • Sexual problems (e.g., delayed ejaculation, erection problems, reduced sex drive, difficulty reaching orgasm for women)

RARE
  • Hives, rash, itching
  • Teeth grinding
  • Fainting
  • Vision problems
  • Hair loss
  • Bleeding more easily (e.g., heavy periods, irregular bleeding, nosebleeds)
  • Aggression
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Unusual heart rhythms (too slow or too fast)
  • Seizures
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice), liver problems
  • Sudden swelling of skin or face

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Escitalopram Krka if you are allergic to escitalopram or any other ingredients. Do not take it if you are also taking certain other medicines called MAO inhibitors or medicines that affect your heart rhythm.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, an abnormal heart rhythm, epilepsy (especially if seizures worsen or start), liver or kidney issues, or diabetes, as your dose may need adjustment.
  • Be aware of increased bleeding or bruising. If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, or feel very restless and can't sit still, or if you have bipolar disorder and feel unusually happy or active (mania), contact your doctor right away.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Serotonergic. Risk of QT prolongation. A significant adverse effect is low serum sodium level. Increases risk of falls. Consider potential interactions especially with preparations that increase risk of bleeding. (updated 12.2.2024)
