How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents 13 years and older typically receive 1 gram once a day. For children aged 3 months to 12 years, the recommended dose is 15 mg/kg twice daily, not exceeding 1 gram per day. For infection prevention after surgery, 1 gram is given intravenously one hour before the operation.

Method

The medicine is given into a vein as a 30-minute infusion by a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Important

Maximum 1 gram per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rash and itching
  • Problems at the injection or infusion site (e.g., pain, inflammation, swelling, hardening, or fluid leakage)
  • Increased number of platelets in blood
  • Changes in liver function tests
  • Diaper rash (in children)
  • Changes in white blood cell count
RARE
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, confusion, or seizures
  • Low blood pressure or slow heart rate
  • Shortness of breath or sore throat
  • Constipation, oral thrush, antibiotic-related diarrhea, acid reflux, dry mouth, indigestion, or loss of appetite
  • Skin redness or flushing/hot flashes
  • Vaginal discharge and irritation
  • Abdominal pain, fatigue, fungal infection, fever, general swelling, chest pain, or changes in taste
  • Changes in some blood and urine tests
  • Decreased white blood cells or platelets
  • Low blood sugar
  • Agitation, anxiety, depression, or tremor
  • Irregular or rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, or bleeding
  • Nasal congestion, cough, nosebleed, pneumonia, abnormal breathing sounds, or wheezing
  • Gallbladder inflammation, difficulty swallowing, fecal incontinence, jaundice (yellow skin/eyes), or liver problems
  • Skin inflammation, skin fungal infection, peeling skin, or surgical wound infection
  • Muscle cramps or shoulder pain
  • Urinary tract infection or kidney problems
  • Miscarriage or genital bleeding
  • Mild allergy, feeling unwell, pelvic inflammation, changes in the white part of the eye, or fainting
  • Hardening of the skin or swollen blood vessels at the injection site
  • Red or purple pin-sized spots under the skin
  • Discolored stool, black tar-like stool
  • Burning sensation, redness and warmth at the infusion site

Important Warnings

  • If you experience an allergic reaction (such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, or rash), contact your doctor immediately.
  • Even though this antibiotic kills bacteria, other bacteria and fungi might overgrow. Your doctor will monitor this.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diarrhea before, during, or after treatment. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicines without asking your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines containing valproic acid or sodium valproate, as this medicine may affect them.
  • Tell your doctor about all your medical conditions, especially kidney problems (and if you are on dialysis), drug allergies (including antibiotics), and nervous system disorders (like tremors or seizures).

  • This medicine is not studied in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if your doctor believes the benefits outweigh potential risks to the baby. Do not breastfeed, as the medicine can pass into breast milk.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how the medicine affects you, as it may cause dizziness or drowsiness.
  • This medicine contains about 137 mg of sodium per dose, which is 6.85% of the recommended maximum daily intake for adults.
