How to Use

Dosage

Adults and children 13 years and older typically receive 1 gram once a day; children 3 months to 12 years receive 15 mg per kg of body weight twice a day, not exceeding 1 gram daily.

Method

This medicine is always prepared and given to you directly into a vein (intravenously) by a doctor or another healthcare professional.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 1 gram for all patients.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting
  • Rash, itching
  • Problems at the injection site (pain, inflammation, swelling, hardening, or fluid leakage)
  • Increased platelet count
  • Changes in liver function tests
  • Diaper rash (in children)
  • Changes in white blood cell count (in children)
RARE
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, confusion, seizures
  • Low blood pressure, slow or fast heart rate, heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure, bleeding
  • Shortness of breath, sore throat, stuffy nose, cough, nosebleed, pneumonia, abnormal breathing sounds, wheezing
  • Constipation, oral thrush, antibiotic-related diarrhea, acid reflux, dry mouth, indigestion, loss of appetite, gallbladder inflammation, difficulty swallowing, fecal incontinence, jaundice, liver problems
  • Red skin, vaginal discharge and irritation, skin inflammation, fungal skin infection, peeling skin, surgical wound infection, hardening of skin at injection site, swelling of skin blood vessels, red or purplish flat spots under the skin
  • Abdominal pain, fatigue, fungal infection, fever, swelling, chest pain, taste changes
  • Decreased white blood cells and platelets, low blood sugar, changes in some blood and urine lab tests
  • Agitation, anxiety, depression, tremors, hallucinations, decreased consciousness, mood changes (including aggression, confusion, disorientation), involuntary movements, muscle weakness, unsteady gait
  • Miscarriage, genital bleeding
  • Allergy, general discomfort, pelvic peritonitis, changes in eye whites, fainting
  • Tooth discoloration

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to ertapenem, any other ingredients in this medicine, or other antibiotics like penicillins, cephalosporins, or carbapenems.
  • If you experience a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of your face, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or a rash, contact a doctor immediately as you may need urgent medical care.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diarrhea before, during, or after treatment, as it could be a bowel inflammation (colitis). Do not take anti-diarrhea medicine without asking your doctor first.
  • Inform your doctor if you are taking medicines containing valproic acid or sodium valproate, used for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, migraines, or schizophrenia.
  • Tell your doctor about any kidney disease (especially if you are on dialysis), any drug allergies (including antibiotics), or central nervous system disorders like tremors or seizures.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, tell your doctor. This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy unless your doctor thinks the benefits outweigh the risks. Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how this medicine affects you, as it can cause dizziness and drowsiness.
