How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it as needed.

Method

Take Equasym Retard in the morning before breakfast; swallow capsules whole with water, or open and sprinkle contents into a spoonful of applesauce and eat immediately.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Joint pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite or reduced appetite
  • Itching, rash, or raised, red itchy bumps (hives)
  • Cough, sore throat, or irritation in the nose and throat
  • High blood pressure
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling aggressive, agitated, anxious, depressed, irritable, and abnormal behavior
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Mood changes or personality changes
RARE
  • Thoughts or feelings of suicide
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech or movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reactions like rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Shaking or tremors
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Muscle aches, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness, crying, being overly aware of surroundings, sleep problems
  • Unusual excitement, hyperactivity, and being uninhibited (mania)
  • Changes in sexual desire
  • Feeling confused
  • Dilated pupils, vision problems
  • Swelling of breasts in men
  • Excessive sweating, skin redness, raised red skin rash
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Seizures (convulsions, epileptic fits)
  • Muscle cramps
  • Peeling skin or red-blue patches / Small red spots on skin
  • Problems with blood vessels in the brain (e.g., stroke, paralysis, movement or vision problems, speech problems)
  • Liver problems, including liver failure and coma
  • Recurring unwanted thoughts
  • Unexplained fainting, chest pain, or shortness of breath (may be signs of heart problems)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you or your child have a thyroid disease or high eye pressure (glaucoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child have had heart problems, like a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, or chest pain.
  • Do not take if you or your child have very high blood pressure or narrow blood vessels.
  • Do not take if you or your child are taking or have taken MAO inhibitor antidepressants in the last 14 days.

  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have mental health problems like psychosis, severe depression, or mania, as methylphenidate can make these worse.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your child have had seizures or epilepsy, or a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines. If you feel dizzy or have blurred vision, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Boys and young men may have long-lasting, painful erections. Contact a doctor immediately if an erection lasts more than 2 hours.
