How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will start with a low dose and gradually increase it as needed.

Method

Take Equasym Retard in the morning before breakfast. Swallow capsules whole with water, or open them and sprinkle the contents onto a tablespoon of applesauce, taking it right away. Drink water after taking it with soft food. Do not save opened capsules.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

  • Headache

  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • Palpitations (fast or irregular heartbeat)
  • Mood or personality changes
  • Joint pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Fever
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Unusual sleepiness or drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite or decreased appetite
  • Itching, rash, or raised red itchy rash (hives)
  • Cough, sore throat, or nose and throat irritation
  • High blood pressure, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness, uncontrolled movements, unusual activity
  • Aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, and abnormal behavior
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not there (symptoms of psychosis)
  • Uncontrolled speech and movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling of face/lips/tongue, difficulty breathing)
  • Unusual excitement, overactivity, and lack of restraint (mania)
  • Constipation
  • Chest discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (seen in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness, tearfulness, excessive awareness of surroundings, sleep disturbances
  • Changes in sexual desire
  • Feeling of confusion
  • Dilated pupils, vision problems
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Excessive sweating, skin redness, raised red rash
  • Heart attack
  • Sudden death
  • Seizures (epileptic fits, grand mal seizures)
  • Peeling skin or blue-red patches on skin
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms (affecting eyes, head, neck, and body) due to temporary brain circulation problems
  • Paralysis, movement and vision problems, speech difficulties (signs of brain circulation problems)
  • Changes in blood cell counts (red and white blood cells, platelets)
  • Sudden increase in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures (neuroleptic malignant syndrome)
  • Liver problems (including liver failure and coma)
  • Changes in test results (including liver function tests and blood tests)
  • Suicide attempts, suicide, abnormal thoughts, lack of emotion, repetitive actions, obsessions
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes in fingers and toes when cold (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Migraine
  • Excessive talkativeness
  • Nosebleeds
  • Severe stomach pain, often with nausea and vomiting
  • Long-lasting or painful erections, increased number of erections, inability to get or keep an erection
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasms (lockjaw)
  • Stuttering

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to methylphenidate or other ingredients.
  • Avoid use if you have a thyroid condition, glaucoma (high eye pressure), an adrenal gland tumor, a severe eating disorder (like anorexia), or very high blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you have had heart problems (such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat) or brain circulation problems (such as a stroke).
  • Avoid use if you have taken antidepressants called MAO inhibitors in the last 14 days.
  • Tell your doctor if you have mental health issues (like schizophrenia, psychosis, suicidal thoughts, mania, severe depression, anxiety, or aggression), as the medicine can worsen them.

  • Tell your doctor if you have liver or kidney problems, seizures, or epilepsy.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child has misused alcohol, medicines, or drugs.
  • If your daughter is pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, discuss with your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have uncontrollable jerking movements or sounds (tics).
  • Do not drink alcohol while on this medication, as it can worsen side effects.
  • This medicine may cause a positive result in drug tests, including for sports.
  • Boys and young men: Seek immediate medical attention if an erection lasts longer than 2 hours or is painful.
