How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually start with a low dose and gradually increase it as needed. Treatment can also start with 10 mg once daily in the morning before breakfast.

Method

Take in the morning before breakfast. Swallow capsules whole with water, or open the capsule and sprinkle the contents onto a spoonful of applesauce and take immediately. Drink water if taking with soft food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 60 mg.

  • Heart palpitations (irregular heartbeat)
  • Mood or personality changes
  • Headache
  • Nervousness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Joint pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Fever
  • Unusual hair loss or thinning
  • Unusual sleepiness or drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite or decreased appetite
  • Itching, rash, or raised red itchy rash (hives)
  • Cough, sore throat, or irritation of the nose and throat
  • High blood pressure, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness, uncontrollable movements, unusual activity
  • Aggression, agitation, anxiety, depression, irritability, and abnormal behavior
  • Teeth grinding (bruxism)
RARE
  • Suicidal thoughts or feelings
  • Seeing, feeling, or hearing things that are not real (signs of psychosis)
  • Uncontrollable speech and movements (Tourette's syndrome)
  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, itching, hives, swelling of face, lips, tongue or other body parts, shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
  • Unusual excitement, hyperactivity, and disinhibition (mania)
  • Heart attack
  • Seizures (convulsions/epileptic seizures)
  • Peeling skin or bluish-red spots
  • Uncontrollable muscle spasms affecting eyes, head, neck, body, and nervous system (due to temporary lack of blood flow to the brain)
  • Paralysis or movement/vision problems, speech difficulties (signs of brain blood vessel problems)
  • Decrease or increase in blood cell counts (red, white blood cells, and platelets), making you more prone to infections, bleeding, and bruising
  • Sudden rise in body temperature, very high blood pressure, and severe seizures ("neuroleptic malignant syndrome")
  • Constipation
  • Breast discomfort
  • Blood in urine
  • Tremor or shaking
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Muscle pain, muscle twitching
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Increased liver enzyme levels (detected in blood tests)
  • Anger, restlessness, or tearfulness, excessive awareness of surroundings, sleep disturbances
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Feeling of confusion
  • Dilated pupils, vision disturbances
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Excessive sweating, skin redness, raised red rash
  • Sudden death
  • Small red spots on the skin
  • Abnormal liver function, including liver failure and coma
  • Changes in liver function tests and blood tests
  • Suicide attempts, abnormal thoughts, lack of feelings or emotional experiences, repetitive compulsive actions, obsessive thoughts about single things
  • Numbness, tingling, and color changes in fingers and toes when cold (from white to blue, then red), known as Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Migraine
  • Excessive talkativeness
  • Very high fever
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeats
  • Nosebleed
  • Severe seizures (grand mal seizures)
  • Believing things that are not real (delusions), confusion
  • Severe abdominal pain, often with nausea and vomiting
  • Prolonged erections, sometimes painful, or increased number of erections, inability to get or maintain an erection
  • Changes in brain blood vessels (stroke, inflammation, or blockage of brain blood vessels)
  • Bruising
  • Inability to control urination (incontinence)
  • Jaw muscle spasm making it difficult to open the mouth (trismus)
  • Stuttering

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you or your child are allergic to methylphenidate or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take if you or your child have a thyroid problem.
  • Do not take if you or your child have glaucoma (high pressure in the eye).
  • Do not take if you or your child have a tumor on the adrenal gland (phaeochromocytoma).
  • Do not take if you or your child have an eating disorder, such as anorexia.

  • Do not take if you or your child have very high blood pressure or narrowing of blood vessels, which can cause pain in arms and legs.
  • Do not take if you or your child have or have had heart problems, such as a heart attack, irregular heartbeat, chest pain, heart failure, heart disease, or a congenital heart defect.
  • Do not take if you or your child have had brain blood vessel problems, such as stroke, aneurysm, narrowed or blocked blood vessels, or inflammation of blood vessels (vasculitis).
  • Do not take if you or your child are currently taking or have taken depression medicines called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you or your child have certain mental health problems, such as psychopathy, schizophrenia, severe mood changes, suicidal thoughts, severe depression, or mania.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking this medicine, as it may worsen side effects.
  • Talk to your doctor if you or your daughter are sexually active, pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • If you or your son experience a painful erection lasting more than 2 hours, contact a doctor immediately.
  • This medicine may affect your ability to drive or use machines. If you feel dizzy, have vision problems, or have difficulty concentrating, avoid these activities.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child are going to have surgery. You should not take this medicine on the day of surgery if certain anesthetics are used, as it may cause a sudden rise in blood pressure.
  • This medicine may cause a positive result in drug tests, including those for sports.
