How to Use

Dosage

One 200 mg tablet with each dose of levodopa.

Method

Take this medicine exactly as your doctor tells you, always with your levodopa medication.

Important

Do not take more than 10 tablets (2000 mg entacapone) per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Involuntary movements, making it hard to do voluntary movements (dyskinesia).
  • Nausea.
  • Harmless red-brown urine discoloration.
  • Excessive movements (hyperkinesia), worsening Parkinson's symptoms, prolonged muscle spasms (dystonia).
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, constipation, dry mouth.
  • Dizziness, tiredness, increased sweating, falls.
  • Hallucinations (seeing, hearing, feeling, or smelling things that are not real), insomnia, vivid dreams, confusion.
  • Heart or blood vessel problems (e.g., chest pain).
RARE
  • Heart attack.
  • Rashes.
  • Abnormal liver function test results.
  • Agitation.
  • Decreased appetite, weight loss.
  • Hives.
  • Colon inflammation (colitis).
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) with yellowing of skin and eyes.
  • Discoloration of skin, hair, beard, and nails.
  • Excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep attacks.
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): stiffness, muscle jerks, tremors, agitation, confusion, coma, fever, rapid pulse, and unstable blood pressure.
  • Rare and severe muscle disease (rhabdomyolysis) causing muscle pain, tenderness, and weakness, which can lead to kidney problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to entacapone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have an adrenal gland tumor (pheochromocytoma), as it can dangerously raise your blood pressure.
  • Ask your doctor if you are taking certain antidepressants.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease.
  • Do not use if you have had a rare, severe reaction to antipsychotic medicines (Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, NMS).

  • Do not use if you have had a rare muscle disease called rhabdomyolysis that was not caused by an injury.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a heart attack or any other heart disease.
  • Be careful if the medicine causes dizziness or fainting when you stand up.
  • If you have prolonged diarrhea, talk to your doctor; it could be a sign of colon inflammation.
  • If you have diarrhea and are losing weight, your weight should be monitored.
  • If you quickly lose your appetite, feel weak, or lose weight, you need a medical check-up.
  • Tell your doctor if you notice unusual urges or behaviors, such as gambling, excessive spending, or increased sexual urges.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness or sudden sleep attacks; do not drive or use machines if this happens.
