How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose depending on your condition; it can vary, for example, from 2000 IU (20 mg) or 4000 IU (40 mg) once daily for clot prevention, to 100 IU (1 mg) per kg of body weight every 12 hours for certain heart attacks.

Method

Your doctor or nurse will usually give you the injection under your skin. In some cases, it can also be given into a vein or a dialysis line. It must not be injected into a muscle.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for your specific condition.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding
  • Increase in liver enzymes
  • Easier bruising, possibly due to low blood platelets
  • Pink spots on skin at injection sites
  • Rashes (hives)
  • Itchy red skin
  • Bruising or pain at the injection site
  • Decrease in red blood cells
  • High blood platelet count
  • Headache
RARE
  • Sudden severe headache (sign of brain bleeding)
  • Abdominal tenderness or swelling (sign of stomach bleeding)
  • Large, red, irregular skin changes with blisters
  • Local skin irritation
  • Yellow skin/eyes or dark urine (liver problems)
  • Severe allergic reaction (rash, difficulty breathing or swallowing, swelling of face, lips, tongue or throat)
  • Increased blood potassium
  • Increase in eosinophils (a type of white blood cell)
  • Hair loss
  • Osteoporosis (bone weakening) after long-term use
  • Tingling, numbness, muscle weakness (especially in lower body) after spinal tap or anesthesia
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Hard lump or swelling at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to enoxaparin sodium, heparin, or other similar medicines.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had a severe drop in blood platelets due to heparin treatment in the last 100 days.
  • Do not use if you have active severe bleeding or a high risk of bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for a spinal injection or surgery with spinal anesthesia within the next 24 hours.
  • Do not switch this medicine with other similar blood thinners without your doctor's advice.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, or are taking other medicines that can increase bleeding.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
