How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose you need, which depends on your condition. A common dose for treating clots is 150 IU (1.5 mg) per kilogram once daily or 100 IU (1 mg) per kilogram twice daily. For preventing clots, it's often 2000 IU (20 mg) or 4000 IU (40 mg) daily.

Method

This medicine is usually given as an injection under your skin. Sometimes it may be injected into a vein or a dialysis tube. You must not inject it into a muscle.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you, based on your specific condition and treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • You might bleed more easily than usual.
  • Blood tests might show higher levels of liver enzymes.
  • You might get bruises more easily or have fewer platelets in your blood.
  • Pink spots can appear on your skin, especially where you inject the medicine.
  • Skin rashes, like hives, may occur.
  • Your skin might become red and itchy.
  • You might notice bruises or pain where you injected the medicine.
  • Your red blood cell count might be lower.
  • Your blood tests might show a higher number of platelets.
  • You might experience a headache.
RARE
  • A sudden, very bad headache could be a sign of bleeding in your brain.
  • Tenderness or swelling in your stomach area, which could mean bleeding in your stomach.
  • Large, red, uneven skin patches that may have blisters.
  • Skin irritation in one specific area.
  • Your skin or eyes might turn yellow, or your urine might become darker, suggesting liver problems.
  • Serious allergic reactions with symptoms like rash, trouble swallowing or breathing, and swelling of lips, face, throat, or tongue.
  • Higher levels of potassium in your blood, more likely if you have kidney problems or diabetes.
  • Blood tests might show higher levels of a type of white blood cell called eosinophils.
  • Losing hair.
  • Weak bones (osteoporosis), making them more likely to break, after long-term use.
  • Feeling tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness, especially in your lower body, after a spinal injection or anesthesia.
  • Losing control over your bladder or bowels (cannot control when you need to use the toilet).
  • A hard lump at the injection site.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to enoxaparin sodium or similar medicines (like heparin).
  • Do not use if you have had a severe reaction to heparin before, causing a big drop in your blood platelets.
  • Do not use if you have severe bleeding or a very high risk of bleeding, for example, from a stomach ulcer or recent brain/eye surgery.
  • If you are being treated for blood clots and are scheduled for a spinal or epidural injection or lumbar puncture within 24 hours, do not use this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
