How to Use

Dosage

Adults and adolescents 16 years and older typically receive one 20 micrograms/1 ml dose.

Method

The vaccine is usually given as an injection into the muscle of the upper arm. If you bruise easily or have bleeding problems, it may be given under the skin.

Important

The standard dose of 20 micrograms/1 ml is the maximum given at one time. This vaccine is not taken daily.

  • Pain or redness at the injection site
  • Feeling tired
  • Irritability
  • Headache
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach) or vomiting (being sick)
  • Diarrhea or stomach ache
  • Loss of appetite
  • High fever
  • Feeling unwell (general discomfort)
  • Swelling or hardening at the injection site
RARE
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle pain
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Swollen glands
  • Hives (itchy rash)
  • Rash and itching
  • Joint pain
  • Tingling or numbness (pins and needles sensation)
  • Easy bruising or bleeding that won't stop
  • Low blood pressure
  • Inflammation of blood vessels
  • Sudden swelling of face, mouth, and throat (severe allergic reaction)
  • Muscle paralysis (cannot move muscles)
  • Nerve problems (e.g., pain, weakness, numbness in arms/legs, Guillain-Barré syndrome)
  • Eye nerve problems or a condition like multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Difficulty moving arms and legs
  • Brain inflammation (swelling of the brain) or other serious brain conditions
  • Inflammation of the brain's lining (meningitis)
  • Seizures
  • Reduced sensation on skin
  • Purple or reddish-purple skin bumps or spots
  • Stiff and painful joints (arthritis)
  • Muscle weakness

Important Warnings

  • Do not get this vaccine if you are allergic to Engerix-B or any of its ingredients, or if you have a high fever.
  • Tell your doctor if you are on dialysis for kidney problems or have a condition that affects your immune system.
  • Fainting can happen after injections. Tell your doctor or nurse if you or your child has fainted after a previous injection.
  • This vaccine may not fully protect everyone against hepatitis B, especially older individuals, overweight people, smokers, or those with long-term health issues.
  • Engerix-B does not protect you if you already have a hepatitis B infection.

  • Seek immediate medical help if you have signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing, bluish skin, or loss of consciousness. These usually appear quickly after the injection.
