How to Use

Dosage

For high blood pressure, start with 5-20 mg once daily. The usual dose for long-term treatment is 20 mg once daily. For heart failure, start with 2.5 mg once daily, and your doctor will gradually increase the dose up to 20 mg once daily or divided into two doses.

Method

You can take the tablets with or without food, with a glass of water.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 20 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness, weakness
  • Dry cough
  • Nausea
  • Headache, depression, fatigue
  • Excessive drop in blood pressure or drop in blood pressure when standing up (causing dizziness or fainting)
  • Chest pain, irregular heartbeat, fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, abdominal pain, changes in taste
  • Rash and other allergic reactions
  • Increased potassium or creatinine levels in the blood
RARE
  • Anemia
  • Excessive drop in blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in diabetics
  • Confusion, nervousness, tingling or prickling sensation on the skin (paresthesia), spinning sensation (vertigo), drowsiness, insomnia
  • Palpitations (feeling strong heartbeats)
  • Runny nose, sore throat, hoarseness, narrowing of the bronchial tubes
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Dry mouth, vomiting, heartburn, stomach irritation, constipation, weight loss
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcer, intestinal paralysis (ileus, causing abdominal pain), pancreatitis (causing abdominal pain)
  • Increased sweating, itching, hives, hair loss, flushing
  • Worsening kidney function, protein in urine
  • Impotence
  • Muscle cramps, feeling unwell, fever
  • Decreased white blood cells
  • Decreased platelets (may cause nosebleeds or increased bruising)
  • Swollen lymph nodes, onset of autoimmune disease
  • Abnormal dreams, sleep disturbances
  • Worsening of Raynaud's phenomenon (fingers or toes aching and turning white, then bluish, then reddish)
  • Lung infiltrates, allergic inflammation of lung alveoli, eosinophilic pneumonia
  • Stomatitis, mouth ulcers, tongue inflammation
  • Liver failure, hepatitis, cholestasis and related jaundice
  • Severe blistering or peeling skin and mucous membrane reactions (erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, pemphigus, erythroderma)
  • Syndrome including fever, inflammation of muscle fascia, vasculitis, muscle and joint pain
  • Decreased urine output
  • Breast enlargement (in men)
  • Increased liver enzymes, increased serum bilirubin levels
  • Swelling of the intestinal wall (intestinal angioedema)
  • Inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to enalapril, any other ingredient in this medicine, or to other ACE inhibitors.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction (angioedema) with swelling of the face, hands, feet, lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble swallowing or breathing, after taking an ACE inhibitor, or if this condition runs in your family.
  • Do not use if you are taking or have recently taken a medicine containing sacubitril and valsartan for heart failure, as this increases the risk of angioedema.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as this medicine is not recommended during pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine containing aliskiren.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
