How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. Typically, the starting dose is 2.5 mg to 20 mg once a day, and the usual long-term dose is 20 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with enough liquid, such as a glass of water. You can take it with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 20 mg per day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Blurred vision
  • Dizziness, weakness
  • Dry cough
  • Nausea
  • Headache, depression, tiredness
  • Low blood pressure, dizziness or fainting when standing up
  • Chest pain, irregular heartbeat, fast heart rate
  • Shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain, changes in taste
  • Rash and other allergic reactions
  • Increased potassium or creatinine levels in blood (lab results)
RARE
  • Anemia
  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in diabetics
  • Confusion, nervousness, tingling or numbness of the skin, spinning sensation, sleepiness, insomnia
  • Palpitations
  • Runny nose, sore throat, hoarseness, narrowing of airways
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Dry mouth, vomiting, heartburn, stomach irritation, constipation, weight loss
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcer, sluggish bowel (ileus), pancreatitis (causing stomach pain)
  • Increased sweating, itching, hives, hair loss, flushing
  • Worsening kidney function, protein in urine
  • Impotence
  • Muscle cramps, general feeling of illness, fever
  • Decreased white blood cells
  • Decreased platelets (may cause nosebleeds or bruising)
  • Enlarged lymph nodes, onset of autoimmune disease
  • Abnormal dreams, sleep disturbances
  • Worsening of Raynaud's phenomenon
  • Lung shadows, allergic inflammation of lung tissue, eosinophilic pneumonia
  • Mouth inflammation, mouth sores, tongue inflammation
  • Liver failure, liver inflammation, bile duct blockage with jaundice
  • Severe blistering or peeling skin and mucous membrane reactions
  • Syndrome with fever, muscle inflammation, blood vessel inflammation, muscle and joint pain
  • Decreased urine output
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Increased liver enzymes, increased bilirubin in blood
  • Swelling of the intestinal wall (intestinal angioedema)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to enalapril or any other ACE inhibitor, or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have had a severe allergic reaction (swelling of hands, face, lips, tongue, or throat, making it hard to breathe or swallow) from an ACE inhibitor before.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or think you might be, or if you are breastfeeding. This medicine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you get sudden swelling in your face, lips, tongue, or throat, or have trouble breathing. These could be signs of a serious allergic reaction called angioedema.
  • See a doctor if you get a high fever, a sore throat, or sores in your mouth, as these could be signs of infection.

  • If your skin or the whites of your eyes turn yellow, tell your doctor right away, as this could mean liver problems.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
