How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe a suitable dose based on your blood pressure and other conditions. Typically, the starting dose is 2.5–20 mg once daily, and the usual maintenance dose is 20 mg once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablets with water. You can take them with or without food, preferably at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling dizzy, weak, or unwell
  • Blurred eyesight
  • Cough
  • Headache, feeling down (depression), fainting spells
  • Trouble breathing
  • Diarrhea, stomach ache
  • Feeling tired
  • Skin rash, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat (signs of an allergic reaction)
  • Changes in blood test results (like high potassium)
RARE
  • Sudden drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up
  • Fast or uneven heartbeats
  • Heart attack or stroke (can happen if blood pressure drops too much)
  • Low red blood cells (anemia)
  • Feeling confused, restless, or having trouble sleeping
  • Tingling or numbness in your skin
  • Ringing in your ears
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, dry mouth, stomach ulcer
  • Kidney problems or kidney failure
  • More sweating, itching, hives (itchy rash)
  • Hair loss
  • Impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection)
  • Swelling in your gut (causing stomach pain or discomfort)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to enalapril maleate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction (angioedema) with swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, making it hard to swallow or breathe, especially with other ACE inhibitor medicines.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine containing aliskiren.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant. Avoid use during early pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you are taking or have recently taken sacubitril/valsartan for chronic heart failure, as it increases the risk of severe swelling (angioedema).

  • Tell your doctor or dentist if you are having surgery or anesthesia, including at the dentist.
  • You may feel dizzy or faint when first starting this medicine, especially when standing up. Lie down if this happens. If symptoms worry you, contact your doctor.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness or drowsiness. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
