How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your specific dose. For high blood pressure, the usual starting dose is 5-20 mg once daily. For heart failure, the usual starting dose is 2.5 mg once daily.

Method

Swallow tablets with water. You can take them with or without food. Take the tablet at approximately the same time each day.

Important

The maximum daily dose for high blood pressure and heart failure is usually 40 mg. Do not take more than your doctor has prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, feeling weak, or general unwellness
  • Blurred vision
  • Cough
  • Headache, depression, or fainting
  • Irregular heartbeat, fast heartbeat, or chest pain
  • Shortness of breath, diarrhea, or stomach pain
  • Tiredness or rash
  • High potassium or creatinine levels in blood (seen in blood tests)
RARE
  • Sudden drop in blood pressure, heart attack, or stroke
  • Anemia or changes in blood counts
  • Confusion, insomnia, sleepiness, or nervousness
  • Tingling or numbness of the skin, ringing in the ears
  • Runny nose, sore throat, hoarseness, or asthma symptoms
  • Nausea, vomiting, constipation, loss of appetite, or dry mouth
  • Muscle cramps, kidney problems, increased sweating, itching, or hair loss
  • Severe skin rashes, Raynaud's phenomenon (cold fingers and toes), or liver problems (like yellow skin/eyes)
  • Enlarged breasts in men
  • Swelling of the intestinal wall (internal angioedema)

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, causing difficulty breathing or swallowing.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you experience swelling of the hands, feet, or ankles.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact a doctor immediately if you develop red, itchy bumps on your skin (hives).
  • Do not use if you are allergic to enalapril maleate or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant (especially after 3 months) or trying to get pregnant.

  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.
  • Do not use if you are taking sacubitril/valsartan (for heart failure) as it increases the risk of severe swelling (angioedema).
  • This medicine is for you only; do not give it to others, even if they have similar symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
