How to Use

Dosage

Typically, start with 5-20 mg once daily for high blood pressure or 2.5 mg for heart failure. Your doctor will gradually increase the dose as needed.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth with a glass of water, regardless of meals. Try to take your medicine at the same time each day.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 40 mg.

  • Blurred vision

  • Low blood pressure (including when standing up)

  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Low blood sugar
  • Confusion
  • Drowsiness, insomnia, nervousness, abnormal dreams, sleep problems
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet
  • Vertigo (spinning sensation)
  • Palpitations
  • Runny nose, sore throat, hoarseness, asthma, lung inflammation
  • Bowel obstruction, pancreatitis
  • Vomiting, indigestion, constipation, loss of appetite, stomach irritation, dry mouth
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcer
  • Increased sweating
  • Itching skin, hives (urticaria), hair loss, severe skin reactions (blisters or peeling skin)
  • Kidney problems or failure, protein in urine, reduced urine output
  • Impotence
  • Muscle cramps
  • Facial flushing
  • Ringing in ears
  • Feeling unwell, fever
  • Cold fingers and toes (Raynaud's phenomenon)
  • Inflammation of the nose, mouth, or tongue, mouth sores
  • Liver damage (jaundice, hepatitis, liver failure)
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Swelling of the intestinal lining (angioedema)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to enalapril, other ACE inhibitors, or any ingredients in the medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a severe allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty swallowing or breathing) with previous ACE inhibitors, or if angioedema runs in your family.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant. This medicine should also be avoided during early pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes or kidney disease and are taking a blood pressure medicine that contains aliskiren.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking a medicine containing sacubitril and valsartan for heart failure, as it increases the risk of angioedema.

  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease (not heart failure), cerebrovascular disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or if you have recently had a kidney transplant.
  • Be careful if you are dehydrated (e.g., due to vomiting, diarrhea, or diuretics), as your blood pressure might drop too low and cause dizziness.
  • Tell your doctor if you have diabetes and are taking insulin or other diabetes medications, as your blood sugar might drop too low.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking potassium supplements, salt substitutes with potassium, or lithium.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
