This medicine treats HIV-1 infection in adults and adolescents over 12, and it is also used to prevent HIV infection.

How to Use

Dosage

One tablet once a day.

Method

Take the tablet with food if possible. If you have trouble swallowing, you can crush the tablet and mix it with half a glass of water or juice and drink it right away. Always take the dose prescribed by your doctor and do not change it without asking your doctor first.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea
  • Dizziness, headache

  • Digestion problems, like bloating or gas after meals
  • Allergic reactions, such as itching, skin rash, darkening of the skin, or swelling
  • Bone loss
  • Low phosphate in blood (seen in lab tests)
  • High creatine kinase (seen in lab tests)
  • Low white blood cell count (seen in lab tests)
  • High fat levels in blood (seen in lab tests)
  • High sugar or bile acids in blood (seen in lab tests)
  • Liver or pancreas problems (seen in lab tests)
RARE
  • Lactic acidosis (too much lactic acid in the blood) can be life-threatening. Symptoms include deep, rapid breathing, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain.
  • Signs of inflammation and infection may appear at the start of treatment as your immune system begins to fight off old infections.
  • Autoimmune diseases (when the immune system attacks your own body) can appear months after starting treatment. Symptoms include muscle weakness, weakness starting in your hands and feet and moving towards the body, heart palpitations, tremor, or hyperactivity.
  • Pancreatitis, causing stomach pain (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count).
  • Muscle breakdown, muscle pain, or weakness due to kidney damage.
  • Fatty liver.
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes, itching, or stomach pain due to liver inflammation.
  • Kidney problems (inflammation, frequent urination, thirst, kidney failure, kidney cell damage, softening of bones, back pain).
  • A bone disease called osteonecrosis (death of bone tissue), with symptoms like joint stiffness, joint pain (especially in hips, knees, and shoulders), and difficulty moving.
  • Low potassium in blood (seen in lab tests)
  • High creatinine in blood (seen in lab tests)
  • Changes in urine (seen in lab tests)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to emtricitabine, tenofovir, or any other ingredient in this medicine. Tell your doctor right away.
  • If you are taking this medicine for prevention, you must be HIV-negative before starting. You must be tested to ensure you do not have HIV infection.
  • Take the medicine every day for prevention; missing doses can increase your risk of getting HIV.
  • Always use condoms and practice safe sex. Do not share personal items or needles. Get regular tests for other sexually transmitted infections.
  • This medicine can affect your kidneys. Your doctor will do blood tests. Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems. This medicine should not be given to adolescents with kidney problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have bone disease, osteoporosis, or a history of bone fractures, as this medicine can affect bone health.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease or Hepatitis B. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor, especially if you have Hepatitis B.
  • If you have lactose intolerance, talk to your doctor.
  • This medicine is not for children under 12 years old.
  • Do not take this medicine with other medicines that contain the same ingredients or certain other antiviral medicines. Tell your doctor about all other medicines, especially those that can harm your kidneys or are used to treat Hepatitis C infection.
  • Do not breastfeed while taking this medicine, as the active ingredients can pass into breast milk. HIV-positive women are not recommended to breastfeed due to the risk of HIV transmission.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness. If you feel dizzy, do not drive or operate machinery.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor, especially if you have Hepatitis B.
