How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one 10 mg tablet once a day.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food, at any time of day, but try to take it at the same time daily to help you remember.

Important

Your doctor may increase your dose up to a maximum of 25 mg once a day if needed to control your blood sugar.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • shaking, sweating, feeling very anxious or confused, fast heartbeat, extreme hunger, headache
  • burning when you pee, cloudy pee, pain in the lower belly or middle back (if kidneys are infected)
  • unusual thirst, dizziness or lightheadedness when standing up, fainting or passing out
  • yeast infection in the genital area
  • needing to pee more often or peeing more
  • itching
  • rash or red skin that may itch, have raised bumps, blisters, or ooze fluid
  • thirst
  • blood tests may show higher fat levels in your blood (cholesterol)
  • constipation
RARE
  • hives
  • straining or pain when emptying your bladder
  • blood tests may show a decrease in kidney function (creatinine or urea)
  • blood tests may show an increase in red blood cells (hematocrit)
  • a severe soft tissue infection in the genital area or between the genitals and anus (Fournier's gangrene)
  • inflammation of the kidneys

Important Warnings

  • Get medical help right away if you lose weight quickly, feel sick or throw up, have stomach pain, are very thirsty, breathe fast and deep, feel confused, are unusually sleepy or tired, or if your breath, pee, or sweat smells sweet or metallic. These could be signs of a serious condition called ketoacidosis.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in your genital area or between your genitals and anus, especially with a fever or general unwell feeling. These could be signs of a rare, serious infection.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to empagliflozin or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have type 1 diabetes.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are at risk of dehydration, for example, if you are sick with diarrhea or fever, cannot eat or drink, take water pills (diuretics), or are 75 years or older.
