How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take, usually 25 mg or 50 mg once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Avoid dairy products, antacids, and mineral supplements 4 hours before and 2 hours after taking this medicine.

Important

Do not take more than one dose per day; your doctor may adjust your dose as needed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Colds, cough, and infections in the nose, sinuses, or throat.
  • Nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, gas, or vomiting.
  • Headache.
  • Muscle pain, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, joint pain, or back pain.
  • Feeling tired, weak, or having flu-like symptoms, fever, or chills.
  • Rash, itching, sweating, hair loss, or dry skin.
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia), drowsiness, or feeling sad or anxious.
  • Dry mouth, sore mouth, mouth ulcers, sore tongue, bleeding gums, or toothache.
  • Eye problems, like dry eyes, eye pain, blurred vision, or cataracts.
  • Changes in liver blood tests.
  • Low red blood cells (anemia), low white blood cells, or low hemoglobin.
  • Increased uric acid levels or decreased potassium levels (blood test changes).
  • Increased bilirubin (a substance produced by the liver) or increased creatinine (blood test changes).
  • Increased levels of some proteins or alkaline phosphatase (blood test changes).
  • Weight loss.
  • Dizziness, trouble concentrating, or memory problems.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations).
  • Shortness of breath or cough with mucus.
  • Numbness, tingling or prickling feeling in skin.
  • Pain, swelling, and tenderness in one leg (usually calf) with warm skin in the affected area (signs of deep vein thrombosis); local swelling due to bleeding under the skin (bruise); hot flashes.
  • Foamy or bubbly urine (signs of protein in urine).
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding.
  • Swelling in hands or feet.
  • Sore throat or difficulty swallowing.
RARE
  • Skin infection or stomach flu.
  • Allergic reaction.
  • Joint pain and swelling due to gout (high uric acid).
  • Lack of interest, mood changes, confusion, agitation, tremors, or nerve damage.
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat, blue skin color, or problems with blood flow to the heart.
  • Sudden shortness of breath, sharp chest pain, rapid breathing, or sleep breathing problems.
  • Yellow skin/eyes (jaundice), stomach pain, bile duct blockage, or liver failure.
  • Kidney inflammation, kidney failure, frequent nighttime urination, or painful urination.
  • Sunburn.
  • Changes in red blood cell shape, anemia due to too much red blood cell destruction, increased immature white blood cells (myelocytes, band neutrophils), or specific blood clotting issues.
  • Low calcium, high blood urea, or high protein in urine (blood test changes).
  • Blisters or ulcers in the mouth, or stomach inflammation.
  • Blood clots in a liver vein (can cause liver or gut damage) or liver failure.
  • Skin changes like discoloration, peeling, redness, itching, skin damage, or night sweats.
  • Abnormal blood clot formation in small blood vessels and kidney failure, or pain during urination.
  • Rash or bruise at injection site, or discomfort in the chest.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to eltrombopag or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease, as there is a higher risk of liver damage and blood clots, especially with advanced chronic liver disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a risk of blood clots or if they run in your family, as this medicine can increase the risk.
  • Tell your doctor if you have cataracts (clouding of the eye's lens).
  • Tell your doctor if you have another blood disorder, like myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), as this medicine might make it worse.

  • Get immediate medical help if you have signs of a blood clot, such as swelling, pain, or redness in a leg; sudden shortness of breath with chest pain; or stomach pain with swelling or blood in your stool.
  • Get immediate medical help if you have signs of liver problems, such as yellow skin or eyes (jaundice) or unusually dark urine.
  • Your platelet count will likely drop within two weeks after stopping this medicine, which can increase the risk of bleeding or bruising.
