How to Use

Dosage

One dose of Eligard 22.5 mg is given every three months, unless your doctor tells you otherwise.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Eligard as an injection under your skin. The injection site should be changed each time, and it should not be injected into a vein or artery.

Not applicable, as it is administered every three months.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Hot flashes
  • Sudden bleeding under the skin or from mucous membranes, skin redness
  • Fatigue, reactions at the injection site (like pain, redness, bruising)
  • Cold symptoms (inflammation of the nose and throat)
  • Nausea, feeling unwell, diarrhea, stomach or bowel inflammation
  • Itching, night sweats
  • Joint pain
  • Frequent urination (also at night), difficulty urinating, painful urination, decreased urine output
  • Breast tenderness, breast enlargement, testicular shrinkage, testicular pain, infertility, erectile dysfunction, decreased penis size
  • Chills (shivering and high fever), feeling weak
  • Prolonged bleeding time, changes in blood test results, low red blood cell count
RARE
  • Urinary tract infection, local skin inflammation
  • Worsening of diabetes
  • Unusual dreams, depression, decreased sexual desire
  • Dizziness, headache, reduced sensation, insomnia, altered taste and smell
  • High blood pressure, low blood pressure
  • Shortness of breath
  • Constipation, dry mouth, indigestion, vomiting
  • Clammy skin, increased sweating
  • Back pain, muscle cramps
  • Blood in urine
  • Bladder spasm, frequent urination, difficulty urinating
  • Male breast enlargement, impotence
  • Drowsiness, pain, fever
  • Weight gain
  • Balance disorders, lightheadedness
  • Muscle wasting/loss of muscle tissue after long-term use
  • Abnormal involuntary movements
  • Sudden loss of consciousness, fainting
  • Flatulence, belching
  • Hair loss, rash
  • Chest pain
  • Injection site ulcers
  • Tissue death at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Eligard if you are a woman or a child.
  • Do not use Eligard if you are allergic to leuprorelin acetate or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • If your testicles have been surgically removed, Eligard may not work.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease or an irregular heartbeat, or if you take medicines for these conditions, as Eligard may increase the risk of heart rhythm problems.
  • Tell your doctor if you have difficulty urinating, develop spinal cord problems, or blood in your urine. You will be monitored closely at the start of treatment.

  • If you experience sudden, severe headache, vomiting, mood changes, or faintness during Eligard treatment, contact a doctor immediately.
  • If you have diabetes, your blood sugar levels should be monitored regularly.
  • Eligard may weaken bones and increase the risk of fractures.
  • If you feel down or depressed during Eligard treatment, tell your doctor.
  • Eligard may cause seizures.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver disease.
  • If you develop a severe rash or blisters on your skin, stop using the medicine and contact a doctor immediately.
  • At the start of treatment, symptoms like bone pain or urinary problems may temporarily worsen. If they do not improve, contact your doctor.
