How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is one 40 mg tablet.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Take the medicine as soon as a migraine headache starts. If the first tablet doesn't help, do not take another. If your migraine returns after the first tablet, you can take a second tablet two hours after the first.

Important

Do not take more than 80 mg (two 40 mg tablets) within 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Chest pain or tightness, palpitations, fast heart rate
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, sleepiness, reduced sense of touch or pain
  • Sore throat, tightness in throat, dry mouth
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea (upset stomach and vomiting)
  • Stiffness (increased muscle tension), muscle weakness, back pain, muscle pain, general body pain
  • General weakness, feeling hot, chills, runny nose, sweating, tingling or unusual sensations, flushing
RARE
  • Difficulty breathing, yawning
  • Swelling of face, hands or feet, inflamed tongue, rash, itching
  • Increased sensitivity to touch or pain, muscle coordination problems, slowed movements, tremor, speech difficulties
  • Feeling unreal, depression, unusual thoughts, agitation, confusion, mood changes, general discomfort, feeling unwell, sleeplessness
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss, taste changes, thirst
  • Joint wear, bone pain, joint pain
  • Increased urge to urinate, difficulty urinating, increased urine volume, diarrhea
  • Vision problems, eye pain, light sensitivity, dry or watery eyes
  • Ear pain, ringing in ears
  • Poor circulation
  • Shock, asthma, hives, skin changes, swollen tongue
  • Throat or chest inflammation, swollen lymph glands
  • Slowed heart rhythm
  • Mood changes
  • Joint inflammation, muscle problems, muscle twitching
  • Constipation, inflammation of the esophagus, burping
  • Breast pain, heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis)
  • Voice changes
  • Fainting
  • High blood pressure (also reported)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to eletriptan or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you have untreated high blood pressure or moderate to severe high blood pressure.
  • Do not take if you have had heart problems (e.g., heart attack, angina, heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or sudden narrowing of heart arteries) or poor circulation.
  • Do not take if you have had a stroke, even a mild one.

  • Do not take if you have used ergotamine-type medicines (like methysergide) or other triptan medicines (like sumatriptan) within 24 hours.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 18 or adults over 65 years old.
  • Avoid taking St. John's Wort herbal products with this medicine.
  • Do not breastfeed for 24 hours after taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy or dizzy. Avoid driving or operating machines during a migraine attack or after taking the medicine.
