How to Use

Dosage

You usually start with 5 mg once a day in the mornings.

Method

Take the medicine exactly as your doctor instructed, either alone or with other Parkinson's medicines, usually in the morning or as two separate doses.

Important

You can take up to 10 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • confusion, seeing or hearing things that aren't there
  • uncontrolled movements, dizziness, headache
  • slow heart rate
  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • changes in liver function tests
RARE
  • mood changes
  • mild and temporary sleep problems (e.g., trouble sleeping)
  • fast heart rate
  • dry mouth
  • agitation
  • heart rhythm problems
  • low blood pressure when standing up
  • skin rash
  • difficulty passing urine
  • problems controlling impulses and repetitive behaviors
  • inability to pass urine (urinary retention)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Eldepryl if you are allergic to selegiline or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use Eldepryl if you are taking certain antidepressants (like SSRIs, SNRIs, or tricyclic antidepressants), certain pain medications (pethidine, tramadol), sympathomimetics, or other MAO inhibitors (like linezolid). Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking.
  • Do not use Eldepryl if you have an active stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have high blood pressure that is not controlled.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have heart rhythm problems.

  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe coronary artery disease (heart artery disease).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have mental disorders (psychosis).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had a stomach or duodenal ulcer before.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have severe liver or kidney problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking levodopa, as Eldepryl can change its effects.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are going to have surgery or a procedure with general anesthesia (being put to sleep).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have other diseases or allergies.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Serotonergic. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Adverse effects include orthostatic hypotension, hallucinations, confusion, dyskinesia, headache, dizziness and bradycardia. Do not use together with other serotonergic preparations. (updated 6.10.2025)
