How to Use

Dosage

600 mg once a day for adults and children weighing 40 kg or more.

Method

Take the tablet whole with water on an empty stomach, preferably at bedtime, which means 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal.

Important

Do not take more than 600 mg in any 24-hour period.

  • Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) that can cause severe skin reactions (e.g., erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Yellow skin or eyes, itching, or abdominal pain due to liver inflammation
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Mood changes
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not real)
  • Mania (a mental state with overactivity, cheerfulness, or irritability)
  • Paranoia (suspiciousness)
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Catatonia (a state where the patient is motionless and mute for a period)
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • Tremors (shaking)
  • Flushing (hot flashes)
  • Increased cholesterol in blood (shown in tests)
  • Itchy rash caused by sunlight reaction
  • Liver failure, which in some cases has led to death or liver transplantation
  • Unexplained anxiety not related to hallucinations, but with possible difficulty thinking clearly or rationally
  • Suicide
  • Encephalopathy (a group of conditions causing brain dysfunction)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to efavirenz or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not use if you have certain heart problems, such as an abnormal heart rhythm or a slow heartbeat.
  • Do not use if a close relative has died suddenly due to a heart condition or has a congenital heart condition.
  • Do not use if your doctor has told you that you have high or low levels of certain electrolytes (like potassium or magnesium) in your blood.

  • Do not take this medicine with certain other medicines; tell your doctor immediately if you are taking any.
  • This medicine does not cure HIV infection, and it must always be taken together with other HIV medicines.
  • Women should avoid getting pregnant during treatment and for 12 weeks after; use reliable barrier contraception. Do not breastfeed.
  • This medicine can cause dizziness, drowsiness, or trouble concentrating. Do not drive or operate machinery if you are affected.
