How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose is 20-25 ml per kilogram of body weight per hour for all ages.

Method

This medicine is given through a tube system and an infusion pump connected to a blood filter machine.

Important

There is no fixed maximum daily dose; treatment continues until your kidneys start working normally again.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Too much or too little fluid in the body (swelling or dehydration).
  • Abnormal levels of salts (electrolytes) in the blood.
  • Low phosphate levels in the blood.
  • High blood sugar.
  • Blood that is too alkaline (low acid level).
  • High or low blood pressure.
  • Nausea, vomiting, and muscle cramps.

Important Warnings

  • You will not be given this medicine if you have very low potassium levels in your blood.
  • You will not be given this medicine if your blood is too alkaline (has a very low acid level).
  • Hemofiltration should not be used if your kidney failure is linked to a very fast metabolism, as the treatment might not be enough to remove waste products.
  • Hemofiltration should not be used if you have poor blood flow around the vein cannula.
  • Hemofiltration should not be used if you have a high risk of bleeding due to blood-thinning medication.

  • Your doctor will regularly check your blood pressure, fluid, salt, and acid balance, kidney function, blood sugar, potassium, and phosphate levels before and during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, as their levels in your blood might change during this treatment.
