How to Use

Dosage

Typically, 40 mg twice daily (morning and late afternoon/evening), but your doctor may start with 20 mg twice daily for two weeks before increasing.

Method

Take the capsule whole with water. Do not crush or chew it.

Important

Do not exceed the dose prescribed by your doctor, which is typically 80 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, dry mouth, constipation
  • Tiredness
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping, agitation, decreased sex drive, anxiety, poor sleep quality
  • Headache, dizziness, sluggishness, drowsiness, trembling, numbness, including skin numbness or tingling
  • Blurred vision
  • Feeling of spinning or vertigo
  • High blood pressure, facial flushing
  • Diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, heartburn, or indigestion
  • Increased sweating
  • Weakness, muscle twitching
RARE
  • Sore throat causing hoarseness
  • Allergic reactions
  • Underactive thyroid, leading to tiredness and weight gain
  • Dehydration
  • Teeth grinding, clenching teeth
  • Feeling disoriented (e.g., about time or place), lack of motivation, difficulty reaching orgasm, unusual dreams
  • Nervousness, difficulty concentrating, changes in taste, poor sleep quality
  • Enlarged pupils or vision problems, dry eyes
  • Ringing in the ears, earache
  • Palpitations, fast and/or irregular heartbeat
  • Fainting
  • Increased yawning
  • Vomiting blood or black tarry stools, bowel inflammation, mouth inflammation, belching, difficulty swallowing, flatulence, bad breath
  • Liver inflammation with stomach pain and yellowing of skin or eyes, itchy rash, night sweats, hives, cold sweats, increased bruising
  • Muscle pain, muscle stiffness, muscle spasms, jaw muscle contraction
  • Difficulty starting to urinate, painful urination, needing to urinate at night, increased urination, abnormal urine smell
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding, menopause symptoms
  • Chest pain, feeling cold/hot, thirst
  • Weight loss, weight gain
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties, dizziness, swelling of tongue and lips
  • Low sodium levels in blood (especially in older adults; symptoms include dizziness, weakness, confusion, drowsiness, and deep fatigue, or nausea and malaise. Severe symptoms include fainting, convulsions, and falls), Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH)
  • Suicidal behavior, suicidal thoughts, mania (overactivity, restless thoughts, and reduced need for sleep), hallucinations, aggressive behavior, and feeling of anger
  • "Serotonin syndrome" (a rare condition that can cause intense happiness, drowsiness, clumsiness, restlessness, feeling drunk, fever, sweating, and stiff muscles), seizures, sudden muscle jerks, restlessness or inability to sit or stand still, difficulty controlling muscle movements, restless legs syndrome
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma)
  • Dizziness, feeling lightheaded especially when standing up, cold fingers and/or toes
  • Throat tightness, nosebleed
  • Cough, wheezing and shortness of breath, possibly with high fever
  • Bright red blood in stools, colon inflammation (causing diarrhea)
  • Liver failure, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a serious condition with blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals), severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face and throat (angioedema), sensitivity to sunlight
  • Muscle jerks
  • Difficulty or inability to urinate, more frequent urge to urinate than normal, weak urine stream
  • Menstrual disorders such as heavy, painful, irregular, or prolonged periods, unusually light or absent periods, abnormal breast milk production
  • Excessive vaginal bleeding shortly after childbirth (postpartum hemorrhage)
  • Falls (especially in older people), abnormal gait
  • Inflammation of blood vessels in the skin (cutaneous vasculitis)
  • Signs and symptoms of a condition called "stress cardiomyopathy," which can include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, irregular heartbeat.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to duloxetine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney disease.
  • Do not take if you are currently taking or have taken MAO inhibitors (a type of antidepressant) in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take if you are taking fluvoxamine (for depression), ciprofloxacin, or enoxacin (for infections).

  • Talk to your doctor if you have high blood pressure or heart disease, as they need to assess if this medicine is right for you.
  • This medicine may make you feel restless or unable to sit or stand still. Tell your doctor if this happens.
  • If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor or go to a hospital immediately.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness and dizziness. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Be extra careful with alcohol while taking this medicine.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. This medicine is generally not recommended during breastfeeding.
