Duloxetine Accord is a medicine containing duloxetine, used to treat depression, anxiety, and nerve pain by increasing certain chemicals in the brain.

How to Use

Dosage

For depression and nerve pain, the usual dose is 60 mg once a day. For anxiety, start with 30 mg once a day, then usually 60 mg once a day. Your doctor will set your specific dose, up to a maximum of 120 mg daily.

Method

Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not crush or chew it.

Important

Do not take more than 120 mg in a single day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache, drowsiness
  • Nausea, dry mouth
  • Loss of appetite
  • Trouble sleeping, agitation, decreased sex drive, anxiety, difficulty having an orgasm, unusual dreams
  • Dizziness, sluggishness, shaking, numbness including skin numbness, tingling or prickling sensation
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Pounding heart (palpitations)
  • High blood pressure, hot flashes
  • Increased yawning
  • Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, vomiting, heartburn or indigestion, flatulence
  • Increased sweating, itchy rash
  • Muscle pain, muscle cramps
  • Painful urination, increased urination
  • Erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems
  • Falls (especially in older people), fatigue
  • Weight loss
RARE
  • Sore throat leading to hoarseness
  • Suicidal thoughts, trouble sleeping, teeth grinding, feeling disoriented (e.g., about time or place), lack of motivation
  • Seizures and involuntary muscle movements, restlessness or inability to sit/stand still, nervousness, difficulty concentrating, changes in taste, difficulty controlling movements (e.g., poor coordination or uncontrolled muscle movements), restless legs syndrome, poor sleep quality
  • Enlarged pupils (black part of the eye), vision problems
  • Vertigo or spinning sensation, ear pain
  • Fast and/or irregular heartbeat
  • Fainting, dizziness, weakness, or lightheadedness upon standing up, cold fingers and/or toes
  • Tightness in the throat, nosebleeds
  • Bloody vomit or black tar-like stools, gut inflammation, belching, difficulty swallowing
  • Liver inflammation, which can cause stomach pain and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Night sweats, hives, cold sweats, sensitivity to sunlight, increased bruising
  • Muscle stiffness, muscle twitching
  • Difficulty or inability to urinate, difficulty starting urination, needing to urinate at night, more frequent urination than normal, weakened urine stream
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding, menstrual problems such as heavy, painful, irregular or prolonged periods, unusually light or absent periods, pain in the testicles or scrotum
  • Chest pain, feeling cold, thirst, shivering, feeling hot, unusual walking
  • Weight gain
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties, dizziness, swelling of the tongue or lips
  • Underactive thyroid, which can cause fatigue or weight gain
  • Dehydration, low sodium in the blood (especially in older people). Symptoms can include dizziness, weakness, confusion, drowsiness, deep tiredness, nausea, and feeling unwell. Severe symptoms include fainting, seizures, and falls, Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH)
  • Suicidal behavior, mania (overactivity, racing thoughts, reduced need for sleep), hallucinations, aggressive behavior and feelings of anger
  • "Serotonin syndrome" (a rare condition that can cause extreme happiness, drowsiness, clumsiness, restlessness, feeling drunk, fever, sweating, and stiff muscles), seizures
  • Increased eye pressure (glaucoma)
  • Cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath, possibly with a high fever
  • Mouth inflammation, bright red blood in stool, bad breath, colon inflammation (causing diarrhea)
  • Liver failure, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes (jaundice)
  • Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a severe disease with blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, and genitals), severe allergic reaction causing swelling of the face and throat (angioedema)
  • Jaw muscle spasm leading to lockjaw
  • Unusual smell in urine
  • Menopausal symptoms, abnormal milk production in men and women
  • Excessive vaginal bleeding soon after childbirth (postpartum hemorrhage)
  • Inflammation of blood vessels in the skin (cutaneous vasculitis)
  • Signs and symptoms of a condition called "stress cardiomyopathy," which may include chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, and irregular heartbeat.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Duloxetine Accord if you are allergic to duloxetine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • Do not take Duloxetine Accord if you have used a MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor) antidepressant in the last 14 days.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are already taking another medicine that contains duloxetine.
  • Do not take Duloxetine Accord if you are taking fluvoxamine (for depression), ciprofloxacin or enoxacin (for infections).

  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have high blood pressure or heart disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking other antidepressants or St. John's wort (a herbal medicine).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have a history of seizures, mania, bipolar disorder, glaucoma (eye pressure problems), or bleeding problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are at risk of low sodium (e.g., if you take diuretics, especially if you are elderly) or taking other medicines that can cause liver damage.
  • This medicine is not recommended during breastfeeding. If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, talk to your doctor.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy or dizzy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
  • Contact your doctor if you have symptoms like restlessness, hallucinations, fast heartbeat, high body temperature, fast blood pressure changes, diarrhea, coma, nausea, or vomiting, as these could be signs of serotonin syndrome.
  • If you have thoughts of harming yourself or suicide, contact your doctor immediately or go to the hospital.
