How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children over 12 years (or over 45 kg), the dose is 200 mg on the first day, followed by 100 mg daily. For children 8-12 years weighing up to 45 kg, the dose is 4.4 mg/kg on the first day, then 2.2 mg/kg daily. For children under 8 years, if used in severe cases, the dose is 2.2 mg/kg every 12 hours.

Method

Doxycycline Macure is given as an injection into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults and children over 12 years is 200 mg on the first day, and 100 mg thereafter. For children 8-12 years (up to 45 kg), the maximum daily dose is 4.4 mg/kg. For children under 8 years, treatment should not exceed 21 days.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Allergic reactions (like sudden wheezing, trouble breathing, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat, rash, itching), chest pain, fever, low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, joint pain, headache, worsening of lupus.
  • Worsening of existing skin problems, red or dry patches on the nose and cheeks (lupus).
  • Inflammation of the vagina and outer female genitals.
  • Fungal infection (candida).
  • Headache.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Itching around the anus.
  • Black hairy tongue.
  • Mouth inflammation with lip pain or sores.
  • Genital or anal inflammation.
  • Increased sensitivity to light or sunlight.
  • Rashes (flat, discolored patches or small bumps) or redness of the skin.
  • Problems with bone development.
  • Skin irritation.
RARE
  • Vomiting and/or heartburn.
  • Low white blood cell count, which can increase infection risk.
  • Increase in certain types of white blood cells.
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, headache, muscle pain), usually goes away on its own.
  • Brown-black discoloration of the thyroid gland (with long-term use).
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Ringing in the ears.
  • Inflammation of the sac around the heart.
  • Excessive redness of the skin.
  • Swallowing difficulties.
  • Abdominal pain.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Tongue inflammation.
  • Changes in liver function.
  • Rash with irregular red patches.
  • Rash with severe itching and raised bumps (hives).
  • Dark spots on the skin.
  • Loosening of nails when exposed to light.
  • High levels of urea in the blood.
  • Vision disturbances.
  • Joint pain.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Destruction of red blood cells.
  • Low platelet count, causing bruising and increased bleeding.
  • Fever, swollen lymph nodes, or rash (DRESS syndrome).
  • Bulging soft spots on a baby's head.
  • Increased pressure in the brain (pseudotumor cerebri), with symptoms such as headache, nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, and vision problems (blurred vision, double vision, vision loss).
  • Watery diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps (pseudomembranous colitis).
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) with nausea, vomiting, and severe upper abdominal pain that spreads to the back.
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis) with muscle and joint pain, fever, flu-like symptoms, stomach pain, dark urine, pale stools, yellowing of eyes or skin, and itching.
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, skin itching, vomiting blood, and fluid retention in the legs and abdomen (liver failure).
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Severe sudden reaction with fever, blistering and peeling skin.
  • Severe allergic reaction with high fever, blistering, joint pain, and/or eye inflammation (Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Flaking skin patches, crusts, and itching.
  • Inflammation of membranes around the brain and spinal cord, and swelling of the optic nerve, with symptoms like headache, stiff neck, fever, nausea, vomiting, and vision problems.
  • Porphyria (a rare blood disorder) with severe stomach pain, constipation, nausea, vomiting, anxiety, insomnia, numbness, and dark or red urine.
  • Tendency to bleed easily (prolonged clotting time).
  • Fast heart rate.
  • Delayed development of tooth enamel.
  • Tooth discoloration and/or tooth development problems.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to doxycycline or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are allergic to other tetracycline antibiotics.
  • Do not use if you have moderate to severe kidney problems.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or think you might be, as it can harm the baby.
  • Do not use if you are breastfeeding, as it can harm the baby's teeth and bone development.

  • Do not use in children under 8 years of age due to risk of permanent tooth discoloration and affecting tooth development.
  • Stop treatment and see a doctor immediately if you experience severe skin reactions like redness, blisters, peeling skin, mouth sores, or fever with swollen glands.
  • Avoid strong sunlight; this medicine can make your skin more sensitive to the sun, causing severe sunburn or rash. Stop using it and consult your doctor if this occurs.
  • If you get severe diarrhea with fever during treatment, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor immediately as it could be a sign of serious bowel inflammation.
