How to Use

Dosage

For adults and children 12-18 years, your doctor will tell you the dose, usually 200 mg on the first day, then a lower dose. For children 8-12 years, your doctor will prescribe the dose.

Method

Take the tablets with plenty of water, preferably with a meal, to avoid stomach upset. Do not take them right before lying down or going to bed.

Important

The maximum daily dose is determined by your doctor based on your specific infection.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (fever, chills, headache, muscle pain, rash). This usually goes away on its own. It happens soon after starting treatment for certain infections (like Lyme disease).
RARE
  • Skin reactions caused by sensitivity to light (photosensitivity).
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Inflammation of the tongue (glossitis).
  • Vaginal infection (vaginitis).
  • Local inflammation around the anus and genitals.
  • Severe bowel inflammation (pseudomembranous colitis) caused by bacterial overgrowth.
  • Anemia (low red blood cells), low platelets, low white blood cells (neutrophils), high white blood cells (eosinophils).
  • Allergic reactions, including hives (urticaria).
  • Headache.
  • Nausea, indigestion.
  • Skin rash (red rashes like maculopapular and erythematous rash).
  • Darkening of the skin (hyperpigmentation) with long-term use.
  • Stomach pains.
  • Tooth discoloration.
  • Joint pain.
  • New infections due to overgrowth of other germs, like yeast infections, bowel infections, or mouth infections.
  • Severe allergic reactions (like anaphylactic shock, low blood pressure, sudden swelling in skin/organs, shortness of breath, fast heartbeat).
  • Increased pressure in the head (symptoms like blurred vision, blind spots, double vision, permanent vision loss).
  • Difficulty swallowing, inflammation of the esophagus, ulcers in the esophagus.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).
  • Problems with tooth enamel development, temporary surface discoloration of permanent teeth, black hairy tongue.
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis), jaundice, liver failure, temporary high liver enzyme levels.
  • Severe skin reactions with blistering and peeling skin (like exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, nail separation due to light, drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS)).
  • A distinct allergic skin reaction (fixed drug eruption) that usually appears in the same spot(s) if you take the medicine again. It can be round/oval red patches with swelling, blisters, and itching.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Increased urea in the blood.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Doximed if you are allergic to doxycycline, other similar antibiotics (tetracyclines), or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use Doximed if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, as it can affect the development of a baby's teeth and bones.
  • Do not use Doximed if you have severe liver problems.
  • Avoid taking medicines containing aluminum, calcium, magnesium (like antacids for stomach acid) or iron supplements for 2-3 hours before or after taking Doximed. They can stop Doximed from working properly.
  • Stay out of strong sunlight while taking Doximed. This medicine can make your skin very sensitive to the sun and cause a rash. If you get a red rash, stop taking Doximed and call your doctor.

  • Doximed should not be given to children under 8 years old because it can permanently stain their developing teeth or cause damage.
  • Do not take Doximed with milk or dairy products. Calcium in dairy can prevent Doximed from being absorbed properly. Take Doximed 1-2 hours before or after milk or dairy.
  • Drink alcohol with caution while taking Doximed, as it might make the medicine less effective.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and aluminium reduce absorption. Protect yourself from excessive exposure to sunlight because of the risk of burning the skin. (updated 6.11.2023)
