Dovequa is a medicine that helps prevent and treat blood clots in veins, especially after hip or knee surgery, or in the legs and lungs.

How to Use

Dosage

For preventing blood clots after hip/knee surgery, take one 10 mg tablet once daily. For treating existing blood clots and preventing recurrence, your doctor will prescribe either one 10 mg tablet or one 20 mg tablet once daily, based on your condition and at least 6 months of treatment.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing, crush the tablet and mix it with water or applesauce just before taking it. Take the tablet at the same time each day to help you remember.

Important

The maximum daily dose prescribed by your doctor is one 20 mg tablet.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced red blood cells, which may cause pale skin, weakness, or shortness of breath
  • Bleeding from the stomach or intestines, urinary or genital organs (including blood in urine and heavy menstrual bleeding), nosebleeds, gum bleeding, eye bleeding (including whites of the eyes), bleeding into tissues or body cavities (bruising), coughing up blood, bleeding on or under the skin, post-surgery bleeding, blood or fluid leaking from a surgical wound
  • Swelling in arms or legs
  • Pain in arms or legs
  • Kidney problems (can be seen in tests ordered by a doctor)
  • Fever
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea
  • Low blood pressure (symptoms may include dizziness or fainting when standing up)
  • General weakness and lack of energy (fatigue, weakness), headache, dizziness
  • Rash, itchy skin
  • Blood tests may show an increase in some liver enzymes
RARE
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling
  • Low number of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions
  • Liver problems (can be seen in tests ordered by a doctor)
  • Blood tests may show an increase in bilirubin, some pancreatic or liver enzymes, or platelet count
  • Fainting
  • Feeling unwell
  • Fast heart rate
  • Dry mouth
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Bleeding into a muscle
  • Blocked bile flow (cholestasis), hepatitis (inflammation of the liver including liver cell damage), yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
  • Local swelling
  • Blood collection (hematoma) in the groin as a complication after a heart procedure where a catheter was inserted into an artery in the lower leg (pseudoaneurysm)
  • Kidney failure after severe bleeding
  • Kidney bleeding, sometimes with blood in the urine, leading to poor kidney function (anticoagulant-related nephropathy)
  • Increased pressure in leg or arm muscles after bleeding, which can cause pain, swelling, numbness, or paralysis (compartment syndrome after bleeding)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Dovequa if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take Dovequa if you are currently bleeding a lot or have a medical condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury, or recent brain/eye surgery).
  • Do not take Dovequa if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you can become pregnant, use reliable contraception during treatment.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines to prevent blood clots (like warfarin or heparin), unless you are switching treatments or using heparin to keep a catheter open.
  • Do not take Dovequa if you have a liver disease that increases your risk of bleeding.

  • Dovequa can cause dizziness or fainting. Do not drive, cycle, or operate machinery if you experience these symptoms.
  • It is very important to take Dovequa exactly as prescribed by your doctor before and after surgery. If you have an injection or catheter in your spine, tell your doctor immediately if you feel numbness, weakness in your legs, or problems with your bowel or bladder after the anesthesia wears off, as you need urgent care.
