How to Use

Dosage

One 10 mg tablet once daily.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. You can take it with or without food. If you have trouble swallowing, the tablet can be crushed and mixed with water or applesauce right before taking it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is typically 10 mg once daily for prevention, but can be up to 20 mg (two 10 mg tablets) once daily for treatment, as prescribed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Reduced red blood cells (causing pale skin, weakness, or shortness of breath).
  • Bleeding in the stomach, intestines, urinary tract, or genitals (including blood in urine, heavy menstrual bleeding), nosebleeds, gum bleeding.
  • Bleeding in the eye (including in the whites of the eyes).
  • Bleeding into tissues or body cavities (bruising).
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Bleeding from or under the skin.
  • Bleeding after surgery.
  • Blood or fluid leaking from the surgical wound.
  • Swelling in limbs.
  • Limb pain.
  • Kidney dysfunction (can be seen in blood tests).
  • Fever.
  • Abdominal pain, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea.
  • Low blood pressure (symptoms like dizziness or fainting when standing up).
  • General weakness, fatigue, headache, dizziness.
  • Rash, itchy skin.
  • Increased liver enzymes (seen in blood tests).
RARE
  • Bleeding in the brain or inside the head.
  • Bleeding into a joint, causing pain and swelling.
  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).
  • Allergic reactions, including allergic skin reactions.
  • Liver dysfunction (can be seen in blood tests).
  • Blood tests may show increased bilirubin, pancreatic or liver enzymes, or platelet count.
  • Fainting.
  • Malaise.
  • Increased heart rate.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Hives.
  • Bleeding into a muscle.
  • Bile duct blockage (cholestasis), hepatitis (including liver damage), yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice).
  • Local swelling.
  • Hematoma in the groin after a heart procedure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to rivaroxaban or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe or active bleeding.
  • Do not take if you have a condition that increases your risk of severe bleeding (e.g., stomach ulcer, brain injury, or recent brain or eye surgery).
  • Do not take if you are taking other blood thinners (like warfarin, dabigatran, apixaban, or heparin), unless changing medication or flushing a catheter.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease that increases the risk of bleeding.

  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a prosthetic heart valve.
  • Tell your doctor if you have antiphospholipid syndrome, an immune disorder that increases blood clot risk.
  • Tell your doctor if you are scheduled for surgery or a procedure, especially if it involves spinal anesthesia.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor, as it prevents serious conditions.
