How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or radiologist will determine the dose; typically, one dose is given per scan, and the dose does not need to be adjusted for those over 65 unless kidney function is impaired.

Method

Dotarem is given as an injection into a vein just before your MRI scan.

Important

Only one dose is given per scan, and there should be at least a 7-day break before the next injection.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Headache
  • Unusual taste in the mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Tingling, warmth, cold, or pain sensation
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Rash
  • Feeling hot or cold
  • Weakness
  • Discomfort, reaction, coldness, swelling, or leakage at the injection site, which can cause inflammation (redness and local pain)
RARE
  • Anxiety
  • Fainting (dizziness and sudden loss of consciousness)
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Palpitations
  • Sneezing
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased saliva secretion
  • Hives, itching, sweating
  • Chest pain
  • Chills

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Dotarem if you are allergic to gadoteric acid, any other ingredient in Dotarem, or other gadolinium-containing contrast agents.
  • Tell your doctor if you have allergies (e.g., asthma, hay fever, shellfish allergy), kidney problems, heart or blood vessel disease, epilepsy, or if you have had an allergic reaction to a contrast agent before.
  • Inform your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, especially those for heart and blood pressure conditions.
  • Remove all metal objects and tell your doctor if you have a pacemaker, metal clips, or any other metal implants in your body, as MRI uses strong magnetic fields.
  • Dotarem should not be used during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary. Discuss with your doctor if you should continue or stop breastfeeding for 24 hours after the injection.
