How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or radiologist will decide the correct dose for you. Usually, only one dose is given per examination.

Method

It is given as an injection into a vein, just before your MRI scan.

Important

Usually, only one dose is given per examination. If another dose is needed, there should be at least a 7-day break between injections.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Headache
  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Unusual taste in your mouth
  • Tingling, feelings of warmth or cold, or pain
  • Changes in blood pressure (high or low)
  • Nausea or stomach pain
  • Rash
  • Feeling hot or cold in your body
  • Weakness
  • Reactions at the injection site (like pain, swelling, coldness, or redness)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylactic shock) which can be life-threatening. Symptoms include swelling of the face, mouth, or throat (making it hard to swallow or breathe), swelling of hands or feet, feeling dizzy or faint (low blood pressure), difficulty breathing, wheezing, coughing, itching, runny nose, sneezing, eye irritation, hives, or rash.
  • Anxiety, agitation
  • Fainting (brief loss of consciousness), coma, seizures, tremors
  • Changes in sense of smell (often unpleasant smells)
  • Eye inflammation (conjunctivitis), red eyes, blurred vision, increased tear production
  • Cardiac arrest, fast or slow heartbeat, irregular heartbeats, widening of blood vessels, paleness
  • Respiratory arrest, fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema), difficulty breathing, wheezing, stuffy nose, coughing, dry throat, tight throat, feeling of choking, bronchospasms, swollen throat
  • Eczema, skin redness, swollen lips, local swelling in the mouth, muscle cramps, muscle weakness, back pain
  • Malaise, chest discomfort, fever, facial swelling, product leakage outside the blood vessel (which can cause skin cell death at the injection site), superficial vein inflammation, decreased oxygen level in the blood

Important Warnings

  • If you are allergic to Dotarem ingredients or any medicine containing gadolinium.
  • If you have previously had an allergic reaction to a contrast agent.
  • If you have asthma or other allergies (like shellfish allergy, hives, or hay fever).
  • If you are taking heart medications (beta-blockers).
  • If your kidneys or liver do not work properly, or if you have recently had or will soon have a liver transplant.
