How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 7.5–15 mg. For elderly or frail patients, the recommended dose is 3.75–7.5 mg.

Method

Take the tablet just before going to bed with water, do not chew; the tablet can be halved to make swallowing easier.

Important

Do not take more than 15 mg as a single dose or in a 24-hour period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Impaired concentration
  • Clumsiness
  • Confusion
  • Emotional disturbances
  • Double vision
  • Muscle weakness
  • Fatigue
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, including sudden swelling of skin or mucous membranes (angioedema) or chest pain.
  • Paradoxical reactions like restlessness, agitation, aggression, delusions, rage attacks, nightmares, hallucinations, psychosis, and other behavioral issues (more common in elderly).
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Depression (existing depression might become more noticeable)
  • Drug dependence (physical and psychological) and withdrawal symptoms like headache, muscle pain, severe anxiety, tension, restlessness, confusion, and irritability.
  • Memory loss
  • Heart problems, including heart failure or cardiac arrest
  • Breathing difficulties (respiratory depression)
  • Stomach or gut problems
  • Skin reactions
  • Falls and fractures (especially in elderly and those taking other sedatives)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to midazolam, benzodiazepines, or any other ingredients.
  • Avoid alcohol during Dormicum treatment, as it can make the medicine's effects stronger and increase the risk of harm.
  • Dormicum may affect your ability to drive or operate machinery; assess your own fitness to drive.
  • Long-term use can cause dependence; stop treatment gradually as advised by your doctor.
  • Not recommended for children under 12 years of age.

  • Avoid use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have long-term breathing difficulties, severe liver disease, myasthenia gravis, or are taking certain other medicines.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Being very short-acting, may cause amnesia and confusion. Increases the risk of drug addiction, rebound insomnia and cognitive disorder. Increases the risk of falls and traffic accidents. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
