How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the usual dose is 7.5 mg to 15 mg. Older or weaker patients should take 3.75 mg to 7.5 mg.

Method

Take Dormicum tablets right before going to bed. You can split the tablets to make them easier to swallow, but swallow them whole with water, do not chew.

Important

Do not take more than 15 mg at one time, and the total dose for one day should not be more than 15 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Daytime sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Reduced alertness or trouble concentrating
  • Clumsiness or poor coordination
  • Confusion
  • Emotional problems
  • Double vision
  • Muscle weakness
  • Tiredness
RARE
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., sudden swelling of skin or mouth/throat, chest pain, serious allergic reaction called Kounis syndrome). Seek medical help immediately.
  • Strange reactions like restlessness, agitation, irritation, aggression, false beliefs, rage, nightmares, hallucinations, psychosis, or other unusual behavior, especially in older people. Stop taking the medicine if these occur.
  • Changes in sex drive.
  • Depression (if you already have depression, it might become more noticeable).
  • Dependence on the medicine (physical and mental), with withdrawal symptoms if you stop suddenly (e.g., headache, muscle pain, severe anxiety, tension, restlessness, confusion, irritability).
  • Memory loss.
  • Heart problems (heart failure, cardiac arrest).
  • Severe breathing difficulties.
  • Stomach or gut problems.
  • Skin rashes.
  • Falls and bone fractures (more common in older people, especially if also taking other calming medicines, including alcohol).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to midazolam, benzodiazepines, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe or long-lasting breathing problems or stop breathing during sleep.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have myasthenia gravis (a muscle weakness condition).
  • Do not take if you are using certain medicines for Hepatitis C (boceprevir, telaprevir), fungal infections (ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole), or HIV infection (protease inhibitors), as these can change how Dormicum works.

  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse, as Dormicum should be avoided.
  • Dormicum can have a stronger effect on older or weaker patients, so your doctor may give you a lower dose.
  • Long-term use can lead to dependence. If you stop taking it suddenly, you might experience withdrawal symptoms like headache, muscle pain, or anxiety. Follow your doctor's advice on how to stop the medicine.
  • Dormicum is only for you; do not give it to others. Do not exceed the dose your doctor prescribed.
  • Do not give Dormicum tablets to children under 12 years old.
  • Do not drink alcohol while taking Dormicum, as it can greatly increase its sleep-inducing effect and the risk of serious breathing, heart, and circulation problems.
  • Avoid Dormicum during pregnancy. If you are pregnant or think you might be, talk to your doctor. Do not use if breastfeeding, as the medicine passes into breast milk.
  • This medicine can affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how it affects you.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. Being very short-acting, may cause amnesia and confusion. Increases the risk of drug addiction, rebound insomnia and cognitive disorder. Increases the risk of falls and traffic accidents. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. Consider the numerous potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 12.2.2024)
