How to Use

Dosage

The usual maintenance dose is 150 mg to 300 mg, taken three times a day. Your doctor will tell you the exact amount.

Method

Swallow the capsules whole with plenty of liquid. Do not chew them. It's best to take them sitting upright to avoid irritating your mouth and throat. Taking them after food can help prevent stomach upset.

Important

Do not take more than 1200 mg in one day. The maximum single dose is 300 mg.

RARE
  • Severe allergic reaction with a bad rash and fever
  • Severe heart rhythm disturbances (very fast or slow heart rate, fluttering, chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, sweating, or fainting)
  • Skin blisters, feeling generally unwell, and fever as part of a DRESS reaction
  • Severe allergic reaction with rash, blisters, and sores on the eyes, mouth, and other wet areas of the body (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
  • Seizures
  • Speech problems
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Memory loss
  • Fainting or loss of consciousness
  • Hiccups
  • Hair loss
  • Joint pain
  • Dry skin
  • Abnormal liver test results
  • Problems with erections
  • Liver problems (seen in blood tests)
  • A big drop in white blood cells, which can make you get infections easily
  • Heart failure
  • Liver damage, including liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • A drop in blood platelets, which increases the risk of bleeding or bruising
  • A condition like lupus, with joint pain, rash, and fever
  • Red and peeling skin
  • Seeing or hearing things that are not there (hallucinations)
  • Temporary trouble thinking clearly or concentrating
  • Double vision
  • Changes in how things taste
  • A big drop in blood pressure, leading to collapse
  • Hot flashes
  • Lung scarring that causes shortness of breath
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Damage to the esophagus (food pipe)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Dopital if you are allergic to mexiletine hydrochloride or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take Dopital if you are allergic to local anesthetics like lidocaine.
  • Do not take Dopital if you have certain heart rhythm problems (like sick sinus syndrome or a very slow heart rate), unless you have a pacemaker.
  • Do not take Dopital if you have heart problems that cause shortness of breath, swollen ankles, or specific types of abnormal heart rhythms (like long QT syndrome, except type 3).
  • Dopital should not be given to children or teenagers under 18 years of age.

  • Take Dopital after food to help prevent stomach upset. Also, reduce your caffeine intake by half while taking this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. It is generally recommended to avoid Dopital during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • This medicine might affect your ability to drive or use machines. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you.
