How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor might start you on 400 mg (two 200 mg capsules), then adjust to 150-300 mg three times a day.

Method

Swallow capsules whole with liquid, without chewing, preferably upright and after food to avoid stomach upset.

Important

The maximum recommended daily dose is 1200 mg (six 200 mg capsules).

  • Lupus-like syndrome (joint pain, rash, fever)

  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
  • Temporary confusion or difficulty concentrating

  • Heart rhythm disorders
  • Severe drop in blood pressure (collapse)
  • Hot flashes
  • Lung scarring causing shortness of breath (pulmonary fibrosis)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Dopital if you are allergic to mexiletine hydrochloride, any other ingredient, or local anesthetics like lidocaine.
  • Do not take Dopital if you have certain heart problems that cause a slow heart rate (unless you have a pacemaker), shortness of breath, swollen ankles, or severe heart rhythm problems like long QT syndrome (type 3 excluded).
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart, liver, or kidney problems, or if your blood potassium levels are too high or too low.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of seizures or abnormal blood test results.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a gene variation that makes you break down certain medicines slowly, as your dose might need to be adjusted.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that can affect your heart rate.
  • Dopital is not for children or teenagers under 18 years old.
  • Tell your doctor if you start or stop smoking while on Dopital, as it can change the medicine's effect.
  • Limit your caffeine intake by half while taking Dopital, as it can raise caffeine levels in your blood.
  • Do not use Dopital if you are pregnant or breastfeeding without discussing it with your doctor.
  • Do not drive or use machines until you know how Dopital affects you, as it can impair your abilities.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience a severe allergic reaction (rash, fever), serious heart rhythm problems (fast/slow heart rate, chest pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, sweating, fainting), DRESS reaction (skin blisters, unwell, fever), or Stevens-Johnson syndrome (severe rash with blisters in eyes, mouth).
