How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 5 mg (one white tablet) every evening. After one month, your doctor may ask you to take 10 mg (one yellow tablet) every evening.

Method

Swallow the tablets whole with water in the evening before going to bed.

Important

The maximum recommended dose is 10 mg every evening.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia (difficulty sleeping)
  • Cold-like symptoms
  • Loss of appetite
  • Hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
  • Unusual dreams, including nightmares
  • Agitation
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Rash
  • Itching
  • Involuntary urination (urinary incontinence)
  • Pain
  • Accidents (increased risk of falls and injuries)
RARE
  • Liver damage or inflammation, with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, itching, yellow skin/eyes, or dark urine.
  • Stomach or duodenal ulcers, causing stomach pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen.
  • Bleeding in the stomach or intestines, shown by black, tarry stools or visible blood from the rectum.
  • Seizures or convulsions.
  • High fever, muscle stiffness, sweating, and reduced consciousness (a severe nervous system disorder).
  • Muscle weakness, tenderness, or pain, especially with general unwellness, high fever, or dark urine. This can lead to kidney problems.
  • Changes in the heart's electrical activity (prolonged QT interval on ECG).
  • Fast, irregular heartbeat and fainting, which can be signs of a life-threatening heart condition.
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Excessive salivation
  • Muscle stiffness, trembling, or uncontrolled movements, especially of the face, tongue, and limbs.
  • Increased sex drive
  • Pisa syndrome (a condition where the body and head involuntarily lean to one side).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to donepezil hydrochloride or any other ingredients of this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a stomach or duodenal ulcer.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had seizures or epilepsy.
  • Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, such as an irregular or very slow heartbeat, heart failure, or a heart attack.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a condition called prolonged QT interval or if anyone in your family has had it.

  • Tell your doctor if you have low levels of magnesium or potassium in your blood.
  • Tell your doctor if you have asthma or another long-term lung disease.
  • Tell your doctor if you have liver problems or liver inflammation (hepatitis).
  • Tell your doctor if you have trouble urinating or mild kidney disease.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Risk of QT prolongation. Increases the risk of cardiac conduction disorders, such as bradycardia. May exacerbate existing COPD. Consider adverse effects affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Consider potential interactions. Avoid concomitant use of anticholinergic medicines. (updated 18.3.2024)
