How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults is 2.5 to 10 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per minute.

Method

Dobutamin Hameln is given as an infusion into a vein by trained healthcare professionals, usually in a hospital, with emergency equipment ready.

Important

The maximum dose given has been up to 40 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per minute.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Increased heart rate
  • Chest pain
  • Heart rhythm problems
  • Abnormal heart function test (e.g., changes in ECG during stress test)
  • Blood pressure increase or decrease
  • Narrowing of blood vessels
  • Irregular heartbeat or feeling your heart pound
  • Fast heart rate (ventricular tachycardia)
  • Headache
  • Asthma-like symptoms (bronchospasm) or shortness of breath
  • Increase in a type of white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Reduced ability of blood to clot
  • Increased need to urinate (with high doses)
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Skin rash
  • Fever
  • Inflammation of the vein at the injection site
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., rash)
  • Inflammation of the heart muscle (eosinophilic myocarditis)
RARE
  • Uncontrolled contractions in the heart chambers (ventricular fibrillation)
  • Heart attack
  • Uncontrolled contractions in the upper heart chambers (atrial fibrillation)
  • Blockage of blood flow from the left ventricle (during dobutamine stress test)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis) or life-threatening asthma attacks
  • Slow heart rate
  • Reduced blood flow to the heart (myocardial ischemia)
  • Low potassium in blood
  • Pinpoint spots on the skin (petechial bleeding)
  • Heart block
  • Narrowing of blood vessels supplying the heart
  • Black areas of dead skin (skin necrosis)
  • Muscle cramps (myoclonus) in patients with severe kidney problems receiving dobutamine
  • Fatal heart rupture (during dobutamine stress test)
  • Restlessness
  • Tingling or numbness (paresthesia)
  • Involuntary muscle movements (tremor)
  • Feeling hot and anxious
  • Muscle spasms

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to dobutamine or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have a narrowing in your heart or blood vessels that prevents blood from filling or pumping properly.
  • Do not take if your blood volume is too low.
  • Do not take if you have high blood pressure caused by a tumor near your kidney (pheochromocytoma).
  • Do not use to check for poor blood flow to your heart if you have certain heart or blood vessel conditions.
